Over priced. Over priced for what you get. Checkin was good. The room was small for the executive room. The tub was so small!. The AC did not work. 16 minute walk to the train station. 20 minute walk to the ship..........................................

Disappointed, not what is was The hotel is showing signs of wear and tear and it’s clear money isn’t being spent on upgrading worn furniture, carpets and bathrooms. Whilst the room was clean enough there was hair in the drawer where the hairdryer is kept and we found a gentleman’s shoe in one of the wardrobes. The bathrooms are showing significant signs of age, with mould on the bath grout. A new shower curtain (shower over the bath) doesn’t detract from aged and marked fittings. Breakfast is buffet - an ok selection but staff didn’t really want to help and seemed put out when I asked if I could have a skinny decaf cappuccino (no). Requested honey - no but offered gold syrup! Marco Pierre-White has his name over the door (an ego wall of his own smug face looking over us) but I wonder if he keeps an eye on what’s being offered and the standard of his restaurant. Leo’s bar in the evening was understaffed even though it wasn’t particularly busy. Reception staff only interested in the business of checking you in or out, not interested in you as a guest. Years ago when this hotel was the De Vere Grand Harbour it had a whole different feel. This is about turning the guests around as quickly and as impersonally as possible whilst charging top dollar. Southampton as a cruise ship town means Royal will always be busy but please management staff don’t take advantage of us, make your guests feel more welcome, and look at what is being offered for the prices you charge.

Nice hotel but areas need attention Stayed overnight as part of a cruise package. It has improved somewhat since our last stay in 2019. The hotel is clean in all areas and the staff are friendly Close to the waterfront, West Quay shopping centre and docks. . However Ladies toilet off reception - toiletries are placed ridiculously high and impossible to use them if you are under 5'. People will not wash their hands properly, spreading germs and infections. I ordered a sandwich without chorizo as I can't eat it because it upsets my stomach. The sandwich duly arrived, as per the menu with chorizo included. I informed the staff and eventually got what I wanted. In our room, 129 Bathroom and room clean, hairdryer in a drawer in the wardrobe, water provided, no fridge. Tea coffee and kettle. There are grab rails on the bath and on the wall by the bath. Thank you. Tissues Towels and flannels are provided. Lots of really hot water. I was unable to use the shower as the toiletries were placed at the same level as my nose and impossible for me to reach and use. The sink toiletries are placed in the corner, over 2' from the sink!!!!! WHY????? Another totally stupid idea but maybe the hotel are saving money by placing them so they're inaccessible and again, encouraging bad hygiene. The toilet is placed in the corner, if you fall ill or slip and end up sprawled on the floor, you would be unable to open the door without hitting the person on the floor. The TV has lots of TV and radio channels but, keeps turning off saying no signal. After a bit of wiggling with the cables it will work for a short while before turning off again. Needs fault tracing and fixing. The TV came on about 0645 this morning, turned it off, a few minutes later it will turn on again. I gave up after a whe and just left it on. Note to management - if people want the TV on, they can turn it on themselves. If they want an alarm call, they order one or set an alarm on their phone. I was unable to open the coffee sachets which my arthritic hands found impossible to open. I had to search out my nail scissors to make my coffee! Fix the silly issues, think about the toiletries and move them and I would be happier.

Friendly staff, nice hotel, spa not so good! The purpose of this break away was my partner's birthday with the idea being that we explored Southampton and the surrounding areas and enjoyed some relaxing time in the spa. On arrival, we were early for check in and the room was not ready, but that was no issue and certainly not an expectation, just a hope. We had a wander around and sat on the dock front in the beautiful wether watching the ferries and cruise liners for a while. On return to the hotel, we were told that there was an issue with our room. The shower screen in the bathroom was broken and they had no idea how long that wood take to repair. We expressed that that wasn't great, and we're told that we had been upgraded to executive and the parking would be free for our stay. We walked away relatively happy, but later questioned why we had been upgraded to a room with a broken shower screen in the first place!! We didn't challenge it! The room was clean and tidy with plenty of space. There was a very large bed, two comfy chairs and a small table, plus a desk with the usual kettle and coffee machine. The bathroom was clean but "grotty" and definitely needs an upgrade. Once the shower screen was fixed, everything worked well. The air conditioning was a different start! Very noisy and did not appear to cool the room at all. Again if was a very outdated unit. We opened all windows and again did not challenge it as we didn't intend on spending a huge amount of time in the room. The hotel in general was clean and tidy, breakfast was good with plenty of choice and the staff were friendly. The spa however was very disappointing. The layout was strange with the pool down a spiral staircase. The staircase was slippery due to it being obviously wet and rusty. It did not feel clean to walk on. The pool was small and as it is open to public too, there was little chance of swimming. 4 to 5 people in the pool and that was that. Very disappointed! There was a jacuzzi alongside the pool which worked well on one side!! The sauna and steam room were back up the stairs, and that was that. The sauna was cold 2 mornings despite the spa already being open for over an hour. I noticed that they over packages at the spa but I have to say, if I had paid the £115 for 1 treatment and the spa I would have been bitterly disappointed. On the whole the hotel was nice and ok for the price, given that we stayed Monday to Friday, term time. I can see that the price is around £300 higher during summer for 3 nights rather than 4 and for that, that in my opinion is extremely over priced. We didn't eat at Leo's or Marco Pierre Whites due to price but there are many eateries close by. We enjoyed our stay in Southampton and the hotel served a purpose. As far as spa hotels go, it wasn't the best.
