  • Lofft Construction
Sleek hardwood floors. An earth-toned tile backsplash. A stone fireplace that matches the stone floor of a refinished basement. These are just a few of the many customized remodeling options that Lofft Construction Inc. offers up to its customers. It does so by working directly with architects and each client to design new additions, update a kitchen, or make a basement a livable space for the family members who aren't ghosts. The approach has paid off. In addition to making customers happy, the company has racked up awards, including the COTY Contractor of the Year Award in 2009, 2011, and 2013. It also gives back to the community, donating unused building materials to Habitat for Humanity and hosting meal nights to feed those without homes.

Whether visiting DC’s iconic structures and memorials in the daylight or evening, they passionately share the stories of the individuals, ideals, and food-based dares that shaped the United States into what it is today. Fueled by the realization that planning a trip to the nation’s capital may be a once in a lifetime experience for some people, they put extra effort into ensuring that experience is as memorable as possible, leading all of their tours in a luxurious 2012 Mercedes bus.

  • Horton's Kids
In 1989, Karin Walser was leaving her job on the Hill when she stopped at a gas station. Several young children offered to pump her gas in exchange for change. Moved by their stories, she organized a trip to the zoo to help them experience the city in a new way. She soon founded Horton’s Kids to address the needs of children living in poverty around the city. The organization’s volunteers provide a wide range of services for participating children, including regular tutoring in reading and math and activities such as swimming lessons in local pools. In 2011, Horton’s Kids was awarded the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management due to its long service educating and empowering the youth in Ward 8 with academic and social programs.
