The Churchill ($8.99) loads its taste gun with Branston pickle relish and fights hunger pangs on ham-coated beaches, cheddar cheese fields, and hot mustard streets. • Hot Tomatoe Italian Bistro
Montreal native Tony Bianco teamed up with executive chef Enzo Addario to create Hot Tomatoe, a traditional Italian bistro boasting a menu that brims with house-made, cooked-to-order pastas, flavorful meat dishes, and full- and light-bodied Italian wines. Their regional cuisine typically integrates up to seven essential ingredients—oil, garlic, basil, tomatoes, pasta, and olives—from which Snow White’s seven dwarves drew their names. In addition, the staff goes shopping for fresh ingredients three to four days a week to supplement both seasonal compositions and year-round dishes, which include veal parmigiana, filet mignon, and penne norma.

  • Mike's Cigars
When it opened in 1950, Mike's Cigar Bar kept its entire stock in a cozy 1,800-square-foot storefront. These days, however, the store doesn't just sprawl its wares across a 17,000-square-foot space. Instead, the staff splits its time showcasing the millions of cigars in its store and recommending the perfect drinks to go with the cigars in its connected lounge. The space is an ode to smoking rooms of years past, albeit updated to include modern amenities, such as the widescreen televisions showing sports events. The lounge also plays host to frequent events throughout the year, including tastings. Although the lounge may be the place to linger, most guests still spend a bulk of their time perusing the store's expansive cigar inventory, which includes more than 300 cigar brands?everything from Rocky Patel to Mike's Cigars' flagship 898 Collection. Besides individual stogies or five-cigar samplers, Mike's stocks humidors, cutters, and accessories.

  • PRP Wine International Palm Beach
Vineyards in 22 countries throughout Europe, South America, and Australia bottle some of their boutique wines exclusively for PRP Wine International—but the company specializes in more than wine. It also lets customers personalize wine bottle labels, and proffers skincare products infused with vitamin-rich leftovers from grape mashings. At the warehouse and during tastings, wine consultants pour familiar wines as well as unusual ones: late-harvest cabernet sauvignons, German wines made from regent grapes, and sangiovese. They also educate customers about unique blends such as true rose wines made in the Old-World tradition—by which red and white wines are fermented separately, then immediately blended together without staging any ice-breaking games. Wine consultants hold open houses and public wine tastings for their member clients, and also travel to homes for private tastings. Each tasting is custom, sometimes including popular wines such as the medium-red Chevralier de Bayard and medium-white Duca d'Amalfi. As the oenophiles pour and dispense anecdotes, they field questions about how to differentiate between wines, pronounce names of varietals, or tell when you’ve spilled wine on your shirt. Most events are open only to PRP Wine International's members, but staffers also host food-and-wine pairings at local restaurants, special warehouse sales, and other public tastings.

  • Wine by the Bay
With an airy, open interior filled with cool concrete decor and contemporary paintings, Wine by the Bay might remind visitors of an art gallery. However, instead of artwork, approximately 400 different wines are the featured attractions. Although the selection emphasizes Old World-style bottles from France and Italy in particular, it incorporates representative examples from winemaking regions across the world. Owner Stefano Campanini and his team specialize in finding little-known gems and small-production, boutique wines, regardless of geography. This curatorial dedication hasn't gone unnoticed. Miami New Times named Wine by the Bay 2013's Best Wine Store and, in 2012, Details Magazine called it one of the five best new wine stores in the nation. Perusing the store alone is always an option. However, Wine by the Bay's true strength is helping customers understand a new wine before tasting it. Each week, the staff samples as many as 150 new wines, but only a select few earn spots in the store. Keeping the selection limited means every team member possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of every bottle. The professionals prefer to share this knowledge by describing bottles with vivid, succinct characterizations instead of parroted blend percentages and tasting notes. By hosting classes, regular tastings, and in-store events, Wine by the Bay furthers its mission of broadening horizons and helping customers engage with newly discovered wines.
