  • Menopause the Muscial
GFour Productions' theatrical achievements are in its numbers: 44 Tony Awards glistening in their trophy cases (with a total of 115 nominations), 56 Drama Desk Awards, and more than 200 cities visited. Yet what allowed those numbers to reach such staggering heights is far from formulaic and much more complex than ballot-stuffing. Since the company burst onto the theatre scene in 1981, it has produced Broadway masterpieces starring Liza Minelli, Anthony Quinn, and Twiggy, as well as shows written by David Mamet, Arthur Miller, and Dolly Parton. Recently it has continued its trend-setting ways by staging the Tony-winning The Book of Mormon and the Off-West End I Love You Because. Other proud moments include their Tony-winning, 50th-anniversary production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and the Pulitzer-winning new play Disgraced, which the New York Times called ?Terrific, turbulent, and roaring to life with currents of dramatic electricity.? GFour has even started crossing language barriers with their shows. After their campy yet touching Menopause The Musical became a hit around the country, they mounted a Spanish-language version of it in Hollywood. The production has since gone international as its own brand, bringing laughter to audiences all over the world.

One of many vaudeville and movie palaces that sprung up in the 1920s, the Warner Theatre today drops jaws in much the same way it did in its infancy: with glittering chandeliers, gilded ceilings, and red-felt seats. Yet before transforming into its modern incarnation, it served as a film-only venue with such luxuries as a rooftop garden and a ballroom in the basement. The Warner even had a dance troupe akin to the Rockettes?called the Roxyettes?who would high-kick before and after the screen lit up. After falling into disarray in the '70s, the Warner became a concert venue, saving it from the wrecking ball but forcing it to require a complete renovation in 1989 to remove years of grime and stray musical notes lodged between seat cushions. At the reopening gala, a host of stars performed, including Frank Sinatra in what would prove to be his last DC show.
