  • Penfold Theatre Company
Penfold Theatre Company takes offense to the notion that the best theater comes from New York. In every successful season, the Round Rock stock of actors and artists give the Great White Way a run for its money with inspired productions. Hatched in the summer of 2007—after an 18-hour road trip led its founders to the dramatic potential of the hills of north Travis and Williamson Counties—Penfold quickly blossomed into a community jewel and a critics’ darling. Winner of the Austin Critics Table Award for Best Musical Production for the third year in a row, the troupe embarks on a new season filled with comedy, drama, and music—all while breeding new stocks of young thespians in their Penfold Players acting classes and summer camps.

  • San Antonio Symphony
Although symphonic concerts could be heard in San Antonio all the way back in the 1880s, the formation of the San Antonio Symphony—the city's first formal orchestra—didn't happen until 1939. It was then that Max Reiter, a native of Italy, was forced from his career and home by a freshly established anti-Semitic policy. Reiter boarded a ship for New York, found the city teeming with exiled musicians like himself, and therefore purchased a train ticket to the South. There, San Antonio's leaders invited Reiter to conduct a demonstration concert for a crowd of 2,500. The success of that initial impression led to the formal founding of the Symphony and an inaugural concert just five months later. Today, Sebastian Lang-Lessing stands where Reiter once stood, leading a full ensemble of 75 musicians with a baton hand honed across the globe.

  • The Nutcracker
Ballet San Antonio, resident ballet company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, is a part of the city's cultural landscape. Since 2012, the company has undergone a tremendous creative metamorphosis. Artistic Director Gabriel Zertuche not only began choreographing new works for the company, he also expanded the repertoire to include grand, full-length ballets such as Cinderella, Dracula, and The Firebird. A new partnership with the George Balanchine Trust gave Ballet San Antonio the rights to the legendary choreographer's Donizetti Variations, and an expanded collaboration with the San Antonio Symphony brings the rich sound of a full orchestra to multiple season productions.

  • Opera Piccola Of San Antonio Presents The Medium
For Mark Richter, opera is more about impact than scale. He founded Opera Piccola of San Antonio to artistically prove that point, making it the company's mission to create accessible productions with a smaller scope. His dedication to intimate performances is right in the name—"piccola" is the Italian word for "small." Today, that less grandiose approach has become the opera's greatest asset: it allows directors and performers to take more risks on stage, and gives audiences a different, up-close perspective on an often misunderstood art form. To further that accessibility, all productions are staged in the opera's original language, with English super-titles for those not fluent in the dialect of dramatics.
