After an afternoon of flying, Ben Cook looked forward to meeting his fellow pilots in hangar 24 at the Redlands Municipal Airport and swapping stories, listening to music, and sharing a few bottles of his latest homebrewed beer. These afternoons served as the inspiration for Hangar 24 Craft Brewery, which Ben founded directly across from the airport as a place where friends could unwind and enjoy a few pints of locally inspired microbrews.
Hangar 24 Craft Brewery on...
Its most popular beers: It's a tossup between Orange Wheat, the American-style wheat beer with puréed, locally grown oranges added throughout the brewing process and Betty IPA, a modern, American IPA whose juicy aromas and pleasant bitterness match hop-forward flavors of tropical fruit, citrus zest, berries and pine.
The importance of using locally sourced ingredients: Hangar 24 Craft Brewery describes its method as farm to foam. This means that the staff seeks out ingredients from regional producers whenever possible, such as the oranges it gets from Inland Orange Conservancy, a nonprofit co-op for local farmers. The brewery obtains its dates from Coachella Valley, spruce from the San Bernardino Mountains, pumpkins from Redlands, red wine grapes from Temecula, and apricots from the High Desert.
Its special events: Live musicians perform every Wednesday and Saturday evening, the brewery hosts an Open Mic Night the last Tuesday of each month, and shows football three times per week. Every Friday, the staff also taps a special randall to infuse a beer with fresh ingredients.
The Beer Selection
Hangar 24 Craft Brewery offers seven staples year-round—including the Orange Wheat and Betty IPA—although it regularly updates its tap list as new brews become available. This list can feature seasonally inspired creations, selections from the Local Fields series of beers brewed with locally sourced ingredients, and limited-edition, barrel-aged releases. Not content to limit the focus of their selection, the brewers craft everything from German-style lagers and Belgian-style dubbels to family-friendly, non-alcoholic root beer.
For Josh and Melissa Fisher, the Redlands area is more than just pretty scenery—it contains many of the ingredients they need to craft inventive beers. Along with their dog, Citra, the Fishers form the core team at Escape Craft Brewery, where they use fresh, local ingredients to come up with complex beers that "escape" the norm. In their tasting room, you'll find football games on TV and a dozen beers on tap, as well as a selection of card and board games to play while soaking in the vintage ambiance. Recycled materials are used to craft airplane seats, motorcycle parts stools, and hotel (Redlands 1930's) door tabletops, creating a strong Redland retro atmosphere.
Also note, the brewery is dog and child friendly. Here are a few you might encounter on your visit:
Midnight Express: a dark milk stout made with coffee, chocolate, and oatmeal (6% ABV)
Pumpkin Pie Haircutted Freak: an autumn-inspired English porter brewed with more than 80 pounds of pumpkins and 60 pounds of caramelized sweet potatoes (8.4% ABV)
Hold the Mayo: Inspired by the taste of pumpernickel bread, this double red ale is brewed with rye, German malts, molasses, and a bit of coriander (8.7% ABV).
Lazy Day IPA and Redlands Nights : two of the most popular brews featuring orange blossoms and vanilla blonde.

Named in homage to Riverside, California's turn-of-the-century citrus packinghouses, this microbrewery handcrafts four year-round beers. The easy-drinking Bell Tower Blonde pairs perfectly with a summer day. The Heritage Pale Ale and the Riley's Red Ale round out the year-round offerings. Besides the core four, the brewery creates an ever-expanding series of IPAs, as well as several specialty and seasonal libations. Inside Packinghouse's tasting room, bartenders pour pints of each day's available brews, which are also available to take home by the bottle and growler.
Inland Empire Brewing Company formed in 2007 when three good friends?all home brewers at the time?happened upon a deal for used brewing equipment. Not willing to let the chance pass, they decided to seize the opportunity, and two years later, officially opened their doors for business. Today, the Inland Empire Brewing Company supplies suds at more than 40 locations. Its Victoria American strong ale?named after the avenue where its hand-zested oranges reside in Riverside?has garnered award-winning attention.
