  • Little Legends Soccer Academy
When Director Tony Youhanna and George Solomos founded Little Legends Soccer Academy in 2009, they found themselves filling a niche. At the time, the North Shore offered no quality soccer coaching for youngsters interested in the game. Their first session was a success, drawing thirty eager players, but it didn't prepare them for the popularity that was to come. Since that day, the academy has ballooned: more than 300 children ages 24 months to 8 years old are currently enrolled in its various programs. Each clinic helps kids build soccer fundamentals such as foot skills, passing, and receiving in an environment that encourages fun and teamwork. Very young players—24 to 36 months—start off in the Born to Kick program, which couples soccer skills with mind-nurturing topics such as shapes, colors, and vocabulary. As children get older and their skills progress, they move into clinics aimed at more advanced techniques, eventually putting them to work in games.

  • Players Sports Group
Simply put, Players Sport & Social Group helps more than 60,000 people each year get together, meet new friends, and have fun. The two-decade-old company has more than doubled in size in the last five years, due in no small part to the wide variety of sports leagues and clinics that it offers at venues throughout the city. Teams or individuals can sign up for sports ranging from dodge ball to beach volleyball to games of "bags," otherwise known as cornhole. Players can check their weekly standings online and review each sport's rules, learning exactly what is considered a foul in kickball or how to dispose of a football opponent's captured flag by burning it in a respectful ceremony. The company also hosts and sponsors social events such as happy hours, beach tournaments, and tasting events such as Whiskey, Wine & Moonshine and The World's Largest Indoor Bar Crawl Goes Mardi Gras.

  • UIC Flames Men’s Basketball Game
In the 1980s, UIC's athletic teams adopted the name The Flames. It's a moniker that pays homage to the Great Chicago Fire, just as the team's mascot, a dragon, represents the fire-breathing cow that allegedly started the famous conflagration. Since the name change, UIC athletes have racked up wide-ranging accolades. The men's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament in '98, '02, and '04, and the women's tennis team has won a staggering 17 consecutive conference titles. UIC has even launched some professional careers, such as that of soccer star Jay DeMerit, who went on to play for the U.S. Men's National Team and competed in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Today, the successes continue to accrue across about 20 men's and women's programs ranging from basketball to swimming to volleyball.
