No other architect has a larger footprint on the Sandhills than the legendary Donald Ross. In 1906, he opened Southern Pines Golf Club as a 9-hole course, which eventually grew to 36 holes. Before Dan Maples transformed it into one of the area's most popular and playable courses, this site had been a training facility for some of America's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute, Dan incorporated into the course features from the original estate, including part of the old training track. The Club at Longleaf features both a subtly rolling Scottish style front nine and dramatic elevation changes on the wooded back nine.

His work, the Whispering Woods Golf Club Course, stands as a credit to him and a pleasure for many. Dan Maples, son of Ellis and renowned golf course architect in his own right, described Whispering Woods this way: "It is a golf course designed with the average player in mind, but good players won't find a pushover. The well groomed condition of the course enhances the design and complements the roll of the land. Golfers experience left to right, short shots, long shots, uphill and downhill holes. Legacy is a fun 18 hole regulation course located at the Legacy Golf Links facility in Aberdeen, NC. From the longest tees it features 7,019 yards of golf for a par of 72. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus II, ASGCA and opened in 1991. The course rating is 73.2 with a slope rating of 132. Legacy is a daily fee golf course with a 'Open To Public' guest policy. This 18 hole Semi-Private course features mature trees with open Bermuda turf fairways and Bentgrass greens. Recently voted the Sandhills Area course of the year for 2010, 2011, and 2012. This is definitely a must play excursion. Other amenities at the golf course include an expanded driving range, practice putting green, a new Bermuda turf chipping area and practice bunker. Located just minutes from the beautiful Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina, Beacon Ridge Golf & Country Club was designed by renowned course architect Gene Hamm. One of the prettiest and well manicured golf courses in the Sandhills region of North Carolina, Beacon Ridge is a favorite with locals as well as the numerous golf visitors, the Pinehurst area attracts each year. Beacon Ridge also boasts the largest lake in Moore County, Lake Auman. Lake Auman is three miles long and two miles wide, and the earthen dam on the south side is the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi.

One of the best kept secrets is out and Carolina Trace Country Club is honored to be one of the top private golf courses in the Raleigh triangle area. Between Raleigh and Pinehurst, Carolina Trace is home to two world class championship golf courses both designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. The Lake Course is situated among our 318 acre lake, offering captivating views throughout the round. The elevation changes on our scenic par 3s are like none in the area. The Creek Course brings character to Carolina Trace with its undulating fairways and meandering creeks fit for a mountain course. The Lake Course opened for play in 1971 and hosts views that can make maintaining focus a difficult challenge during one’s round. In 2011 the bent grass greens were renovated with the Mini-Verde strand of Bermuda grass. The renovations continued in 2015 with a modernizing of the course which included rebuilding all of the bunkers with a high tech liner system and crisp white sand. Some bunkers were added and many were moved and reshaped to increase their relevance to the modern game. The tee boxes were rebuilt, laser-leveled and added to, lengthening the course to a total playing distance of over 7200 yards from the championship tees. Brand new cart paths were installed, along with several miles of drainage and freshly leveled fairways to keep the course in top condition. Carolina Trace has hosted a plethora of events including the Women’s US Open Qualifier, Men’s Us Amateur Qualifier and the American Junior Golf Association Tour, along with dozens of other local golf outings. Carolina Trace continues to provide a world class experience to everyone who takes that first swing.
