  • Diamond Lake Resort
Back in the 1920s, Diamond Lake Resort was a fishing lodge. Today, though, it's much more—a hub for year-round recreation in Crater Lake National Park. In the summer, visitors fish for rainbow trout in the glittering lake and bicycle down lush trails. In winter, they drive snowmobiles over the fresh snow and cross-country ski along seven miles of groomed trails (or through 35 miles of rugged backcountry). Whatever the season, the resort offers plenty of places to stay, just as it did back in its fishing lodge days. Today, though, lodgings range from motel-style rooms to standalone vintage cabins.

  • Sand Master Park
Some kids eventually outgrow their sandbox. Others just find more sand. Lots and lots of sand. At Sand Master Park, that natural material covers 40 acres, where it takes the form of sculpted dunes and rolling slopes ideal for sand-boarding: a sport similar to snowboarding, just with more agreeable weather conditions. Here, instructors teach lessons on how to glide over sand and eventually execute tricks on jump rails and slides. The sandy grounds also allow for other activities, including skim-boarding, sand sculpting, and dune buggies.

  • Elk Lake Resort
Despite its endless amenities and activities, the true gems of Elk Lake Resort are the towering peaks and evergreen-laden valleys of the surrounding Cascade Range mountains. The resort functions as a base camp for this landscape, inviting visitors to explore it with cross-country skis and snowmobiles during the winter and canoes and backpacking excursions during summer months. To accommodate longer stays, the grounds also sport 10 cabins featuring full kitchens with microwaves and combination coffeemaker/particle accelerators, as well as three rustic camping cabins that provide propane heat and shelter from the elements without the electricity or furnishings of the larger units. Regardless of the season, the resort's lodge welcomes visitors and plies them with everything from quick mugs of local beer to full meals made with locally grown ingredients.
