When recession forced their pizzeria to close in 2008, Mrinali Goswami and her husband, Bala Dommeti, raised some funds by selling the plants they recreationally grew in their backyard on Craigslist. With an unexpected surge in popularity, the duo soon found themselves on the radar of zoning officials, who informed them they couldn’t legally sell plants in a residential area. Fortunately, they were able to use the sales they already made online to purchase a three acre nursery and, according to the Rockdale Citizen, house more than 5,000 plants. What was once a part-time gardening hobby now blossomed into a full-time gig.
Pixies Gardens cultivates all sorts of plants, from pear trees and dogwoods to corkscrew willows and more than 10 varieties of hydrangeas, and Mrinali grows many of the fruit trees and ornamental shrubs herself. Because they don't use a greenhouse, their hardy plants undergo few, if any, transplanting shocks when they leave the nursery.
"Feed, wash, and treat your pet the natural way." This is the tagline of Intown Healthy Hound & City-Kitty, a new full-service pet supply store and grooming parlor with an eco-friendly bent. Pets can soak in hypo-allergenic baths and feast on organic biscuits at a shop where all-natural shampoos and treats are the norm rather than the exception. Pets and their parents can also take advantage of local resources supported by Intown Healthy Hound and City-Kitty such as doggie day cares, mobile vets, and fire hydrant sensitivity trainings.
At Let's Paint Pottery, aspiring artists can drop in anytime to customize plain pieces of pottery. After selecting an unfinished ceramic piece from the studio's selection of serving ware and home decor items, they’ll use provided stamps, stencils, and idea books to map out their design and next tattoos. They then draw from a palette of more than 50 paints and glazes to coat their creation before handing it over to a staff member, who fires the work in the studio's kiln. The studio also offers two-hour canvas-painting sessions, wherein guests armed with acrylic paints learn brushstroke basics.
