  • DuPage County Fair
The DuPage County Fair takes place July 22-26. Tens of thousands of people flock to the DuPage County Fair each summer—in fact, the event drew over 100,000 attendees in 2014 alone. That popularity isn't due to a single event or attraction, but rather to the sum of a multi-day festival showcasing agriculture and celebrating summertime fun as a whole. The Axe Women Loggers of Maine will be competing all five days in Lumberjack shows, and the Willis Clan will be performing on Thursday evening. There will be roving acts, 4-H exhibits, variety of musical entertainment, animal shows, and pig races all included with admission. Saturday the International Pro Rodeo Association will host two sanctioned events. Walking the long line of vendors takes attendees past familiar fair foods, and a craft beer tent with over 40 craft beers. On Sunday there are two demolition derbies. These are just some of the events that make the DuPage County Fair a great destination for families.

  • Lakeside Legacy Foundation
Back in the 1860s, grain magnate Charles S. Dole purchased a 1,000-acre expanse of land overlooking the sparkling waters of Crystal Lake. There, he built a classically designed three-story mansion with lavish touches including Italian marble, black walnut orchards, and lush gardens, where the Ringling Bros circus housed the circus animals off season. At the time, the tract of land was known as Lakeland Farm, and over the next century it passed hands from the Doles to an elite country club to the Franciscan Order to the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. Today, the mansion is in the hands of the Lakeside Legacy Foundation. The staff maintains the grounds and ensures the home remains a valuable resource for the residents of Crystal Lake with ventures such as hosting workspace for local artists and musicians. The Dole Mansion offers, 2 award winning galleries, tours, culinary programs, dance programs, and a 100 seat performance venue called 'the Listening Room. The grounds also host special events including art fairs, Christmas celebrations, and McHenry County's "Granddaddy of All Festivals," the Lakeside Fest, which has been bringing live music, local eats, and traveling artists to the shores of the lake for more than 36 years.

  • Festival of The Horse & Drum
Established: 2013 Staff Size: 50+ people Parking: Parking lot Handicap Accessible: Yes Recommended Age Group: All Ages The founders of the Festival of The Horse & Drum describe their event as the "United Nations of horses and humans," and not without good reason. The multicultural, multimedia equestrian gathering educates guests on the importance of horses throughout world history, and transports guests to a Native American pow wow, a cowboy town, and a renaissance faire. Bands representing several cultures perform on the Horse-a-Palooza stage, and the Equus Film Festival showcases long and short works starring stallions and mares, such as renowned horse actor Mare-lon Brando.

Chicago Food & Wine Festival is just one of a series of vibrant events curated by Distinctive Events, Inc., an organization determined to corral a bastion of delicious offerings for lovers of cuisine and adult beverage. Whether conducting a cooking competition or introducing celebrity chefs directly to a participant’s taste buds, the organizers aim to simultaneously thrill and educate. • Penrose Brewing Company
Like most brewery owners, Penrose Brewing Company cofounders Eric Hobbs and Tom Korder cannot possibly pick a favorite beer. For them, it’s more about the experience of drinking great beer; and that experience is social — best shared with friends over hours of conversation and laughter. With a focus on Belgian-inspired session ales, Penrose brews skew toward the lower end of the alcohol by volume, which means people can share a few and keep the party going longer. In Penrose's taproom, customers are able to try year-round favorites like their crisp, dry saison, Devoir saison, to their hoppy Belgian IPA, Fractal, or any number of taproom-only small batch offerings that never leave the brewery. Some pours even come with a brewery tour. The taproom further encourages lingering with its stock of board games, while its BYOF-friendly attitude, rotating art installations, and special events keep visitors coming back often.

  • Harvest Taste - Sweet & Savory
In 2004, four-year-old Jim Zellmer's life was changed forever when he was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. So his family did something about it. His grandparents owned a farm in Iowa, and Jim himself came up with the idea—what if the Zellmers grew pumpkins and sold them to support their cause? They raised more than $6,000 for diabetes research in their first year, and their harvest festival has grown every year since, featuring everything from food tastings to live music, carriage rides, and a petting zoo.
