In 1976, Joan Barnes—a Californian mom frustrated with the lack of spaces where she could take her kids for safe and age-appropriate play time—took matters into her own hands and founded Gymboree Play and Music. In the decades since Gymboree’s founding, Joan’s vision of a safe place where youngsters could build confidence and creativity has come to fruition and spread to 30 countries around the globe. Staffed by attentive and expertly trained instructors, each Gymboree outpost adheres to a curriculum of activities designed by experts to foster the development of children’s’ cognitive, physical, and social skills through structured play and close readings of Goodnight Moon. The staffers also conduct entertaining classes that cover subjects ranging from music to sports, imparting valuable lessons of imagination and physical activity to developing minds. To further set apart her business, Barnes employed nationally renowned playground designer Jay Beck to design the proprietary play equipment at her centers.
Towering alongside Clayton Road, the Tropicana Lanes sign has a vintage, weather-beaten look acquired after more than 50 years of welcoming visitors. Three generations of Richmond Heights bowlers have ventured into the facility during this time, scattering pins across the same 52 lanes that have hosted the nationally televised Professional Bowlers Tour. Owner and PBA Hall of Fame inductee Ray Bluth oversees the day-to-day operations of the alley—which, despite its retro disposition, sports modern extras such as automatic scoring and singing shoelaces, and is one of the largest alleys in the state. Between frames, bowlers can kick back inside the cocktail lounge, play in the game room, or munch on wings, nachos, and hot dogs from the snack bar.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Sessions will be on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings beginning 9/6 & 9/7.
Group Therapy is an opportunity to
explore and find new ways to deal with interpersonal challenges. If you're on a personal growth journey or dealing with life's difficulties group therapy may be right for you.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I received my Masters degree in Social Work from Loyola University in 1989. I worked as a group therapist: in a hospital, university and outpatient settings.
My work with people is relational and focuses on the thoughts, beliefs, and patterns in thinking that cause us distress in our daily lives.
What do you love most about your job?
My goal is to explore how individuals have adapted to life, what works well for them, as well as what no longer serves them. I help people look at their lives and build a context to discover where their beliefs and behaviors come from, and what steps are needed to bring them the life they desire.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
"I now know I am the one responsible for changing my life.
I'm no longer waiting for my boss, or spouse, or children to bring me the happiness I desire."
Though Mallia Color & Design Studio’s name honors the salon’s commitment to sculpting fetching hairstyles, the beauty boutique also excels at nearly any type of aesthetic treatment. Aestheticians administer a dozen different skin therapies, which range from microdermabrasion treatments to collagen and elastin facials. They also perform makeup services and ready visages for applications with facial waxing, threading, and inspiring pep talks. Nail techs groom digits with spa or express manicures and pedicures and apply and fill full sets of eye-catching nails. In the salon, a talented team of stylists crops tops. It can also lengthen coifs with extensions and customize hues and texture with a variety of color and keratin treatments.
