Janez Ambrozic kicks off each workshop with a technical lesson about exposure, lenses, and equipment before delving into the many facets of composition and portraiture. He also teaches students how to snag dramatic nighttime images and crisp close-ups. Classes are held at 78th Street Studios on select Saturday mornings and select weekday evenings; view the schedule.
Janez Ambrozic popped out of his mother's womb with a camera in his hand. By the age of nine, he had built his own dark room and learned how to develop film. But rather than hide behind the camera, he stepped out and became the subject, filling his college years with modeling gigs for Banana Republic, J.Crew, and Abercrombie. This early success prompted a move to Los Angeles, where he pursued a career as a professional model and actor. While he was striking poses, he observed professional photographers and directors at work, and being in their company soon inspired him to return to his first love.
Today, Janez crafts bold images with masterful lighting techniques that he picked up from California's catwalks, soundstages, and Rembrandt impersonators. Though his skill has garnered the attention of magazines, he chooses the rugged path of the freelancer, which gives him the liberty to snap portraits, chronicle weddings, and concoct sultry boudoir photos at will. When he isn't practicing his trade, he teaches others the art of photography during workshops and private sessions.

“This class is for those who want to learn the basic functions of DSLR cameras and lenses. I am a hospice nurse who loves photography and bought my first DSLR camera and couldn't figure out the next step after switching the ON button even after watching countless You Tube videos on using your DSLR camera. You might say that you can watch those videos and save yourself a little money and I tried to do that but I got confused. After this class, I went home and reviewed those same videos and they became a lot clearer. This is because he uses words you can understand and also uses analogies to help you grasp the concepts better and the best thing is you can stop him anytime to ask questions and he actually takes his time to answer. My advice is that you should do a little research of your own camera and have your questions ready by the time you take his class so you get the most out of it. At the end of the class he walks you through some things about your camera, one on one, and then encourages you to go to RYFM.com for a complete guide of your camera. This instructor is a very experienced photographer having travelled all over the world for many years and he definitely is not just another reviewer on You Tube who has no work to show for his "expertise". He also has a great sense of humor which helped break the ice when you in the same room with 8 strangers. He is very professional yet also friendly and charming. I cannot wait for the Advanced Class as we get to go out with him and do some actual shooting and then coming back to his beautiful studio to get our work critiqued. ”
