In a Nutshell

Miami Heat’s DJ Irie hosts a post-Thanksgiving hip-hop festival packed with rappers and DJs, including Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, and Kid Ink

The Fine Print

Every rap track must have a solid backbeat, which can be composed of the sound of drums, handclaps, or birds flying into glass doors. Feel the rhythm with this GrouponLive deal to see the Black Friday Festival, featuring Kendrick Lamar, at the Sunset Cove Amphitheater in Boca Raton. For $60, you get two tickets for general admission (up to a $90 value, including all fees) and two $10 food vouchers for Friday, November 23, at 6 p.m. (up to a $110 total value). Doors open at 5 p.m.

A sonic antidote to tryptophan lulls, the Black Friday Festival skips the stress of post-Thanksgiving frenzies while kicking off the holiday season with a package of all-star hip-hop and dance jams. DJ Irie, musical mixologist of the Miami Heat and a staple of the Miami party scene, plays host to the evening by gluing a slew of acts together with his turntable finesse before rap sensation Kendrick Lamar takes center stage.

By the time he was 16, Kendrick Lamar had a record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment on the strength of his debut mixtape. Since then, the hip-hop artist from Compton has worked with stars in the form of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Talib Kweli, and Lady Gaga, and has released a collection of singles and his first studio album, Section.80, to critical acclaim. During his live performances, Lamar transfixes the crowd with his palpable confidence and swagger. Whether traversing the stage or materializing in the sound booth, he incites the audience to sing and rap along to hits such as “Swimming Pool (Drank),” a hypnotic piece on the seductive, sometimes dangerous nature of alcohol that showcases his rapid-fire lyrical style.

Other acts on the packed ticket include Pusha T, formerly of the acclaimed duo Clipse and currently a member of Kanye’s GOOD Music stockade, who flexes his lexicon over fat tracks heard on the recent Cruel Summer compilation. West Coast wordsmith Kid Ink, still riding high on the success of his independent debut album, Up and Away, teeter-totters his rhymes on a playground of dense bass lines and dank beats heard in his singles “Time of Your Life” and “Lost in the Sauce.” Other hip-hoppers share the stage with soul singers, electronic acts, and DJs such as Miami’s Emir Duru, all stirring genres and adding rich variety to the musical spread. While the tunes fill the air, fans can fuel their bump machines with concessions, get their fingers sticky on cotton candy, and reload sweat glands and water pistols with beer and spirits.
