The Issue: Early Detection of Hearing Loss in Children

Hearing loss can affect a child’s ability to develop communication, language, and social skills, according to the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. With early detection, permanent deafness can sometimes be averted, and early intervention can help children with hearing loss reach their full potential.

The Campaign: Purchasing Audiometer for Hearing Clinic

If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, matched by Chris Maling & the Maling Team of Colliers International to become $1,000, then John Tracy Clinic can purchase an audiometer for its community hearing-screening program. Each additional $10 donation will be used to help purchase more hearing and screening equipment to improve the clinic’s community hearing-screening program.

John Tracy Clinic’s community hearing-screening program conducts more than 20,000 screenings each year at preschools and other childcare centers in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Certified audiometrists conduct the tests using specialized equipment that can detect hearing loss, as well as middle-ear infections, fluid buildup, and other conditions that might impair young children’s hearing.

All donations up to $500 will be matched by Chris Maling & the Maling Team of Colliers International. You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.

John Tracy Clinic

Spencer and Louise Tracy—whose son John was diagnosed with hearing loss as an infant—founded John Tracy Clinic in 1943 as a resource for other parents. Since then, it has become Southern California’s leading education and diagnostic center for young children with—or at risk for—hearing loss. It conducts more than 20,000 early-detection hearing screenings each year and provides counseling services for families. The clinic also hosts educational workshops for parents with children dealing with hearing loss and collaborates with Mount St. Mary's College to offer accredited master’s-degree education programs in auditory-verbal and early-childhood deaf education.
