  • YogaFest 2014
YogaFest celebrates the physically, mentally, and spiritually empowering characteristics found in even the most disparate yoga styles by inviting visitors to a tranquil retreat located within the verdant surroundings of the Pigeon River State Forest. Over the course of four days, practitioners of all backgrounds and skill levels can connect with other individuals from throughout the region, forming a community as they bond over their shared passions for yoga and holistically focused living. The stresses of everyday life slowly dissolve as guests spend their days attending various yoga sessions and movement-based classes, using the forest's peaceful and quiet atmosphere to facilitate introspective meditation or guided self-discovery. The festival focuses heavily on Kirtan as well as devotional music and singalongs. In addition to classes, YogaFest will also host numerous workshops over the four days, introducing visitors to the fundamental concepts behind everything from acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine to reiki therapy and tai chi. Local vendors will also be in attendance, displaying handmade crafts, healthy-living products, and cloud-stuffed yoga mats. The event is family-friendly, with a tent devoted to activities for kids. Attendees are encouraged to bring food if desired, or may opt to purchase from food trucks on-site.

  • Hubbard Lake Triathlon
The fitness professionals behind Hubbard Lake Triathlon have designed a course to challenge the body and excite the mind. Competitors will stroke through a 1.5K swim along the North Shore of Hubbard Lake, pedal a 40K bike ride over hills around the lake, and gallop through the back roads on the final 10K run. Teams of three can also enter, designating one team member to compete one leg of the race a piece. All successful finishers receive a medal, and awards are given out for fist, second, and third overall male and female in each race, as well as first and second finisher in each age group. On-course water stations keep athletes hydrated, while post-race snacks indicate that it's time for their afternoon nap. The race benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters, Hubbard Lake's North End Park renovations, and the American Diabetes Association.

  • YMCA Camps
It's one of the central rituals of youth: summer camp. No child should be deprived of the joys of canoeing under an open sky, sleeping in a rustic cabin, telling stories around a campfire, and spit-taking at a lonely sasquatch gazing mournfully from the forest. That's why the YMCA runs two camps in eastern Michigan. Just an hour from downtown Detroit sits Camp Ohiyesa, located on the edge of Fish Lake in the middle of lush farmland. And at Camp Nissokone, 170 acres of lakefront campground offers everything from horse riding to wakeboarding to arts and crafts.
