At Riviera Fitness Centers of Madison—a women-only fitness haven—patrons tackle Les Mills group fitness classes, strength and cardio equipment, and one-on-one personal training, all designed to make gals feel comfortable as they forge toward their fitness goals. The onsite childcare staff supervises tykes so moms can cartwheel off to classes such as BodyAttack and Zumba. During Zumba classes, the studio transforms into a club-like dance-party atmosphere, accented with colored lights and thumping Latin-inspired beats. The instructors lead the easy-to-follow dance steps on an elevated stage, allowing everyone to see the right moves instead of getting discouraged and reverting to the Hokey Pokey. Boot-camp sessions fuse cardio and resistance training to tone physiques as campers wield exercise equipment including kettlebells, barbells, and bosu balls.
In addition to getting fit during group training, ladies can seek one-on-one fitness advice during personal training sessions, which are tailored to suit their goals. Riviera Fitness Center also offers tanning, bronzing recently toned bodies for the beach or flexing in front of a mirror.
Heather and Sarah may both be seasoned exercise instructors and personal trainers today, but they took very different routes to fitness. Heather Miller grew up living and breathing sports, as an active participant in the outdoors at her family horse farm. Whereas Sarah Roap only turned to exercise as a last resort when her doctor informed her in 2009 that at 285 pounds, she wouldn't live to see her grandchildren. Through a combination of working out and gastric-bypass surgery, Sarah shed those dangerous pounds. Today, both trainers help clients stay on a healthy track at Sustainable Fitness, where they offer group fitness classes and personal training.
The marble-sculpted instructors at Gold’s Gym whittle weak bodies into hardened muscle masses with a schedule of classes for all experience levels. In bright, spacious rooms, fledgling health buffs can shake the dust off of rarely used muscles and strengthen exteriors until they're as awe-inspiring as an Edison on ice-skates.
Zumba Fitness strives to free their studio of the pressure, intimidation, and self-consciousness that can spoil an otherwise enjoyable workout. To that end, the instructors forge a welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere that encourages students to go at their own pace. With certification in teaching original Zumba, Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, and Zumbatomic, the team spends five days a week guiding students through heart-pumping dance routines set to rhythmic, Latin-inspired music, helping them burn calories and drop dress sizes by simply moving to the beat. Instead of having students painstakingly memorize each step, instructors encourage them to improvise and have fun with the choreography. Participants of all skill levels can customize the routines by moving at a slower pace or adding more complex steps to create their ideal exercise session.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham's Campus Recreation Center opens its doors to the community, encouraging fit-seekers of all ages to get active. The all-inclusive 150,000-square-foot facility has it all: swimming pools, cardio and weight-training equipment, aerobics studios, and an indoor track. For those who like to mix calorie burning with friendly competition, the site also hosts basketball, racquetball, badminton, and volleyball courts; an indoor soccer and floor hockey field; and even a climbing wall. Kids aren't left out of the fun, either. The center hosts kids' day camps, packed with athletic activities and arts and crafts, and welcomes youths to imitate mountain goats on the rock wall or play racquetball in the supervised Kid Zone.
