250 Gateway Boulevard
Rocky Mount,

Mohamed Elsayed began to professionally dissect computers at age 16, accumulating enough technical expertise to open Sunset Computer Works a decade later. Alongside expert staff members who share his congenial attitude, he now patches up all manners of electronics, ranging from smartphones and security cameras to Macs and video-game consoles. Consistently studying, Mohamed keeps abreast of the latest and least costly methods for restoring screens and software. His interview in the Rocky Mount Telegram assures clients that he'll examine "pretty much anything that has got a motherboard in it or a circuit board." Because he prefers to fix products onsite rather than work on them as he travels the country in a sloth-drawn carriage, he can guarantee a 7-day turnaround on most items, including iPhones.

Mohamed marries his overarching knowledge of all things wired with a fair-minded approach to repair fees. Complimentary diagnostics ensure that customers don't pay if their equipment requires no maintenance, and flat-rate prices often cover all aspects of hardware and software work. Employees strive to remain neutral in a world of brand alignment, refraining from making unnecessary purchase recommendations or speaking via iPad recordings of their mouth.

1802 Sunset Ave
Rocky Mount,

In a 2011 interview with the Rocky Mount Telegram, George Millar reveals he has been a facilitating fun for a long time. "Soccer wasn't in existence when we started," he points out, and neither were home video games. Noticing a dearth of places in his hometown where kids and families could safely enjoy themselves, he put his skills as a professional contractor to work. In 10 outdoor batting cages, he installed pitching machines that sling baseballs and softballs from T-ball speeds up to 80 miles per hour. Next, he and his crew of five guys—all of whom are still operating the business today—built an 18-hole mini-golf course modeled after those in Myrtle Beach, designing a path that winds past waterfalls, natural plantings, and tricky bunkers filled with saltwater taffy. An arcade blares with games and the crack of pool balls ricocheting inside, and an elephant-shaped inflatable bounce house bobs with jumpers inside until they come zipping out down its slide.

1265 Independence Dr
Rocky Mount,

Every dish at Showside Grill & Bakery passes through the gaping mouth of a four-eyed beast. The playfully painted service window is one of the many quirky design elements of the eatery's lime-green 75-seat dining room, a fitting backdrop for its eclectic cuisine and variety of live shows. Chefs Michael and Art Ward whip up burgers and hot dogs, seafood, and classic comfort-food favorites such as the open-face hot turkey on texas toast with gravy. The Monday-night Breakfast at Dinner event flip-flops the usual routine with a spread of eggs, hash browns, and pancakes. The prodigious dessert menu, like a slow-loris telethon, seems to stretch on interminably, running the toothsome gamut from truffles to mousse to classic cobblers and cakes as well as a long list of pies both traditional and inventive. Weekends add live entertainment to the mix, kicking off with Thursday-night karaoke followed by the beats of live local bands on Friday and Saturday.

102 North Pine Street
Spring Hope,

Throughout the week, Bounce-N-Around buzzes with activity as kids scramble and jump over the springy landscapes of inflatable bouncers. Arcade games test hand-eye coordination and aptitude at space invading, and electric kiddie rides—such as horses, cars, and helicopters—bob back and forth in their own area. A mini movie theater provides a scaled-down, all-ages cinema experience, complete with tiered seating.

191 S Wesleyan Blvd
Rocky Mount,

Led by owner and instructor Jan Faithful, Faithful Stables' team of experienced horse whisperers trot new riders through the basics of horsemanship before embarking with groups on equine treks through the countryside. Under the tutelage of a thoroughbred-horse lover, amateurs channel their centaur ancestry and become saddle savvy enough to handle a steed. After 30-minute lessons, groups of four embark on a trail ride through Rocky Mount's scenic countryside. Individual riders match up with a group of up to three other horsemen, and quartets set out on private trail voyages. The 30-minute escapade takes riders through rows of cotton and tobacco fields, where they’ll fill their lungs with fresh air far from the grimy city and its slickly dressed pigeons.
