More than 20 years ago, Leo van Ulden took a fall. He had just started up one of the easier ascents at a British Columbian climbing spot his brothers had taken him to, and his foot slipped and sent him on a brief tumble. But he mastered his fear rather than giving into it, finishing that ascent before conquering other routes the same day. From that first adventure, Leo fell in love with the adrenalin, beauty, and challenge of climbing. When his mother suggested they start a business together a few years later, a climbing gym felt like the logical choice for the family of climbers. Wallnuts Climbing Centre was born then, helping bring more local climbers into the sport since its inception. Home to a group of tight-knit, passionate climbers and setters, the gym has sprouted nationally competitive junior teams under the family’s guidance and boasts an ever-expanding course list for climbers of all proficiency levels. Leo also leads guided tours of some of the most scenic climbing areas in Eastern Canada, drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of the topography to find appropriate routes and quality carryout along the way. He even penned a book, Newfoundland Climbing Guide, which is the first such guide for the region.

MAX Arts. Athletics. Wellness. is a kind of Athenian-style gymnasium that celebrates the intersection between physical and intellectual pursuits. The instructors teach arts courses in dance, music, and theatre and help to increase physical grace with jazz and ballet, train aspiring thespians through acting classes, or build musical acumen during one-on-one singing or instrument lessons.

On the other end of the spectrum, athletics programs include volleyball and basketball camps to hone sport-specific skills, such as spiking the ball or building new hoops out of peach baskets. Martial-arts instructors arm students with confidence and self-defence skills through youth karate classes, adult kenpo training, and women-only kick-boxing courses. Yogis and Pilates instructors also make use of the centre’s space to strengthen cores and limbs with stretches and asanas.

All classes take place within one of four top-of-the-line teaching centres, which house ample classrooms along with a fitness and conditioning centre. Inside, 66 feet of field turf stretch across the gym, providing better shock absorption as students work with kettlebells, battling ropes, sleds, and hurdles.

Sculpted into the rocky hillsides that comprise the shores of an Atlantic Ocean inlet, The View Golf Resort charms clubbers with sweeping vistas throughout its nine-hole, executive course. Seaside breezes snake through groves of pine trees and fairway-side shrubs, cooling off players and hot-tempered 9-irons as they traverse the 2,250-yard layout. Though lacking in overall length, the course challenges duffers with narrow fairways cleaved through ponds, sand traps, and natural hazards, placing accurate shot-making at a premium.

Along with its scenic fairway chain, The View Golf Resort regales guests with two distinct eating options—the Dining Room and Lounge—that serve a menu of traditional Newfoundland cuisine. Six well-appointed suites dot the resort’s placid expanse, providing overnight accommodations for those hoping to enjoy a romantic getaway with their golf bag or spend a weekend boating, hiking, or fishing in the resort’s rustic surroundings.

A passion for the culinary arts led Allan Hussey to the kitchens in the restaurant industry, where he honed his skills as a cook but gained weight due to unhealthy personal eating habits. To help him shed the pounds, Hussey sought the aid of personal trainers, and focused on making greater lifestyle changes than simply hitting the gym. He married his cooking skills to his quest for fitness to create for himself a system that led him to lose 55 pounds, after which he decided to bring his skills to the public by creating Taste Life Fitness.

Today, the company's staff supplies students with programs that focus on three major pillars: strength, endurance, and taste. Trainers assess each individual's health before prescribing a personalized program of exercise enhanced by a mix of dietary recommendations and recipes invented by Hussey. Programs typically come in highly digestible four-week chunks, which can produce changes in body shapes as profound as a caterpillar transforming into a werewolf.

As the clicking shutter brings fleeting darkness to the lens of his high-resolution Hasselblad H4D-40 camera, Robert Young's memory stirs up snapshot recollections of his father's darkroom in the mid-1960s. As a born-and-raised shutterbug, Robert eagerly transitioned from the domestic darkroom of his youth to the infinite possibilities of the digital realm. Working with his wife Lynn, Robert harnesses decades of photographic experience to thoughtfully compose Celebrity Photo Studio's striking, colourful images while continuously pushing boundaries with new technology and lighting methods. Though Robert's keen artistic eye has allowed him to soar over picturesque coastlines and dive deep into underground mines to photograph hard-hatted workmen and mole-people family reunions, he also enjoys capturing ineffable moments at weddings, childhood milestones, and family gatherings.
