Authentic European baking techniques and recipes rule the kitchen of Sigrid's Cafe and Fine Bakery. In 1983, Sigrid and Josef Krautgartner left Germany for Canada, leaving their popular bakery back home to start a new one in central Ontario. Over the years, ownership and spatula-wielding duties have passed from Sigrid and Josef, to their daughter Andrea, and then to her children Tim, Patrick, and Jessica—but the family's commitment to organic ingredients, traditional Continental desserts, and formal baking technique has endured. Along with full cakes and savory breads, the case brims with buttercream slices, date squares, poppy seed cake, and marzipan loaves. And with gluten-, dairy, and egg-free baked goods on offer, Sigrid's is a place for appetites of all stripes.
