It's hot in the summer. Bring water, hats, fans if not in the AC train.

Scenery would be better during the summer months or early fall. Grand daughter enjoyed her first train ride.

Nice relaxing trip on the train. The 185ft bridge over the Des Moines river is beautiful.

It was a great outing that i would highly recommend to anyone who has any interest a most impressive, beautiful scenic part of Iowa that I doubt many Iowans are even aware exists, as well as anything to do with Iowa history and in particular railroading. The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad Museum is loaded with so much to see, do and interact with.Well run by a bunch of dedicated volunteers and clean. A wonderful outing for kids and in particular, the steam train ride. The mammoth steam and smo ke snorting steam locomotive is one of the coolest machines running anywhere and it is well worth the trip just by itself to witness in operation. The steam train trip out and over the very high Des Moines River Valley (almost a gorge it is so high) is spectacular. Really loved it all and will be back next year from Eastern Iowa with more family and friends. You don't need to spend a whole lot of money and travel out of state to enjoy something this outstanding, unique and reasonably priced right in the heartland of Iowa.

A very relaxing train ride through some scenic areas. I would ask that certain cars be designated for families with small children. The crying and screaming got to be annoying for the rest of the passengers and took away from the rest of the ride.

You can only make reservations Monday through Friday so you need to plan ahead. We took the leap of faith and went really early without a reservation since we did this as a last minute thing and it worked out but sometimes they do fill up so make a reservation if you have to travel there.

Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum?s campus features 9,000 square feet of exhibits, classrooms, and libraries dedicated to all eras of Iowa?s railway history. But the museum campus is one part of the organization?s attractions, since the it keeps actual 1920s-era coach cars coasting the tracks, chugging past sights and recreating the experience railway riders have enjoyed for nearly 100 years. The ancient engine follows the tracks in the Des Moines River Valley, taking visitors to old coal towns or allowing them to soak in scenic views. After their ride, travelers can return to the museum, where they can view track equipment, ogle dining car china, or learn why one has to wear coveralls to steer a train.
