About Russo's Coal Fired Italian Kitchen-Corpus Christi

Anthony Russo, a first-generation Italian, spent years in the kitchens of his parents and other Italian chefs learning authentic Italian recipes for sauces and pastas. He eventually drew on his experience kneading New York–style pizza to open his own chain of pizza franchises. Exposed bricks surround the burning embers at the core of the oven, which bakes thin-crust specialty pizzas, such as escargot with pesto, alongside heart-healthy pies with fresh spinach and artichokes. After sliding out golden-crusted pizzas and singed fairy-tale witches, chefs fill ovens with calzones and flatbreads. A full wine list supplies bold cabernets and crisp pinot grigios.

This establishment had no sign above their door or store front but there was an "OPEN" sign in the door. We went in and were seated. After ordering drinks we were informed the restaurant was closing the very next day for a 6 week remodel to reopen as a different restaurant so this was their last night as Russo's. I'm also surprised Groupon didn't contact all purchasers of this deal to inform them the business was closing. We were surprised since the Groupon was still good through Dec 10. When drinks arrived the waiter informed us the menu was limited since it was their last night and ingredients were running out. He told us to order then he'd check with the kitchen to see if it could be done. We made our choices and he returned to say we were good. The appetizer came and it was cold in spots and lukewarm at best. When the pizza arrived several minutes late he informed us that they were out of one ingredient but made it for us anyway. It doesn't matter if it's your first or last day of operation, give it your all. We got the distinct impression by words, actions and products, that everyone had pretty much thrown in the towel. To cap it off, when I went to pay the point of sale system "froze up" and the waiter left with my credit card to ring up our Groupon balance at the bar. My card was out of sight for at least 5 mins which gave me an uneasy feeling and it just felt sketchy overall. Unfortunately, we were on vacation and had already driven 20 mins one way to go to this restaurant. Add in the fact that I had a very hungry wife and 18 month old child, and it was closing the next day so we felt we had no other option than to use our Groupon right then.
