The Big Kahuna Luau, Honolulu

It starts with a walk down a lava stone path past gardens of fragrant flowers and luscious green eucalyptus. As afternoon shifts to evening, visitors can grab a seat on the bench swing and watch the sun go down beneath a massive mango tree, gazing at distant sights such as Diamond Head and the Pacific Ocean. And when the dark has finally settled, performers light up the scene as they demonstrate traditional Polynesian music and dance by firelight. But more than a feast for the senses, Big Kahuna Luau is an actual feast. Mai tais, taro rolls, and steamed coconut jasmine rice are nearly enough to complete the Hawaiian culinary experience, but the real star of the show is the banana leaf-braised kalua pork, roasted the old-fashioned way—in an underground oven known as an Imu pit.
