I was rather disappointing in the food and service. i thought the sandwiches were overpriced for what was on the plate. The service was underwhelming, as they seemed over whelmed in trying to take orders, and do what ever they were trying to do behind the counter.

The service was terrible this past time, which is why my boyfriend and I will NOT be returning. The male server/cashier was the only one on floor, with two kitchen workers behind the counter. I've seen this place when it's really busy, and usually the person taking the order is quite pleasant and helps newcomers through the menu. The day my boyfriend and I went it wasn't half as busy as days I've seen the place prior, and the guy running the front had a poor way of handling customers. When asked how the groupon works, he said anything on the menu is fine to order and walked away. When I was ready to order, he said the fritatta I wanted couldn't be made because cookies are in the oven. No apology, or other recommendation of a similar product. This could've been prevented if he had said first off, "anything on the menu works for the groupon, except right now our oven is presently in use so we can't make (whatever sandwiches are out of the question)". I decided on the avocado veggie sandwich instead. He asked me which bread I'd like, and when I asked him what my options are, he merely pointed at the food case. Keep in mind they recently renovated so in the new food case display there are NO names for any of the bagels/breads offered. A description of the breads would've been nice, and would've helped speed the process along much faster. After ordering, my boyfriend and I sat at the counter near the door to wait for our two sandwiches, and we watched the way the guy dealt with more customers. He wasn't friendly, appreciative, or remotely skilled. When a lady asked for her cupcake, he handed it to her with his bare hands, and then licked the icing off his fingers-- and didn't wash his hands after. I've worked in food service for 7+ years, and customer service should be a big priority. Since he is the ONLY person customers are dealing with, even more so he should be friendly and quick to respond to customer questions/needs. He is the only person anyone in the cafe that day will remember dealing with at fresh cafe, therefore he is the face of your establishment. He approached my boyfriend and I twice, with someone else's orders, and when our sandwiches DID come out, there was no apology for the confusion or anything. My boyfriend's tuna melt was rather tasty (the standard I usually held fresh cafe's food at which is why I purchased the groupon in the first place), however my avocado fritatta was flavorless and dry. We also ordered a mini red velvet cupcake to put our order over $17 which was the requirement of the groupon, and were not given that with our sandwiches so my boyfriend went to retrieve it from the guy. When he asked about the cupcake, the guy responded, "yeah? What about it?" My boyfriend asked, "Could we please have it? ... Since we didn't get it yet?" The guy just said, "oh" and handed it to him. I LOVE red velvet cupcakes, so I was hoping this sweet little treat would at least make the terrible ordeal well worth it, but it was SO dry I spat it out and threw it away. We will not be returning, which is very disappointing because I've thoroughly enjoyed the sandwiches, corn chowder, and acai bowls prior to this experience. As amazing as food can be at an establishment, if the service is terrible, it is never worth going back to. And seeing as the food this past experience wasn't memorable, fresh cafe won't be something to be missed.

Since they renovated the last time I went, I just wish they could have a little bit more and better furnitures. And I didn't like how the menu placing that was a little further away from the register so it makes me keep forgetting what I was looking/wanted to order.

We had the turkey croissant (they were out of chicken), and the spinach salad. Along with the tomato bisque, it was all enough for my husband and I to share. It was all very good and we would return in an instant!

From Our Editors

Fresh Cafe strives to kindle both healthy eating habits and creativity with a locally sourced menu and regular cultural performances, which help the eatery fit in nicely within the trendy industrial district of Kaka'ako. Its chefs whip up sandwiches, salads, and soups using fresh portobello mushrooms from the organic Small Kine farm, lettuce from the family-owned Otsuji farm, and vegetables from the pesticide-eschewing Ho Farms. The baristas, meanwhile, press each espresso beverage with handpicked beans from Sunbean Coffee.

Wooden tables and cushy chairs are scattered in the colorful café alongside bookshelves filled with reading materials. Bright neon signs broadcast colorful messages from the walls, none of which are threatening or syntactically unsound. A green awning stretches over a lengthy patio where vibrant murals beam down from the walls onto an abundance of chairs and tables. The café's large warehouse hosts slam poetry, live music, and art performances.
