We went to Donovan's to welcome home our Marines son-in-law just back from deployment AND because he and our beautiful daughter are expecting to deliver our first grandchild today! (Ok..enough grandmother bravado). ...we went early so we could watch the sunset over the cove and the view was not disappointing. Luckily we enjoyed a splendid sunset and a delightful dinner to accompany it. The waiter was not pushy, but attentive as we wanted to enjoy some wine before getting started on ordering. The Italian Barolo was fruity and earthy, but not too sweet or too dry. Ah..Italian wines! Hubby ordered the Caesar salad and Captain Marines had the wedge. Beautiful daughter and I decided to just graze off the men's plates, which they graciously allowed. Both salads were spot on. (This veggie lover is a snoot when reviewing a restaurant, basing their cooking skills upon how much attention they devote to the salads and vegetables. A restaurant that just throws an unseasoned, poorly-cooked veggie side on the plate is just a rotten restaurant, in my humble opinion...but I digress....). Ok. Yes, the salads were excellent! Hubby and BD (beautiful daughter) ordered filets, bearnaise on the side. SIL Captain had a rib eye, also with bearnaise. I opted for the halibut, since I also am a fish/seafood lover. The beurre blanc under the fish was delicately seasoned with lemon and capers and was very good. The only thing I saw anyone adding was a bit of salt, which I also added to my fish. I confess to liking a good bit of salt, but let's confess...it makes everything taste better!! The side of skin-on mashed garlic potatoes were a hit all around as well. For dessert, the restaurant started us off (complimentary) with a creme brûlée, seeing BD was 9+ months pregnant and wanted to honor her. How thoughtful of them! It was QUITE good...and we should know, as we get it everywhere we go, and (again) make a 'judgment' of the restaurant on the merits of their egg/cream-caramelized sugar concoction...yes, Donovan's did well. The tiramisu that we actually ordered was very good, not the best I've ever had, but of course, I'm a harsh critic. We didn't leave a whole lot of it, so that says a lot. The coffee was good too! Oh my...I loved it all. The servers were attentive, but not intrusive; responsive to small talk, but not too chatty. They were lovely and kind to us and didn't rush us at all as we lingered to see the sun sink below the horizon. A truly lovely evening to welcome Captain Pilot home, and to anticipate the entry of Grandest of Granddaughters... I'm one VERY blessed mother! Thanks, SIL Captain for a delightful evening, and thank you, Donovan's, for serving us graciously!
