About Vila Algarve

The starters at Vila Algarve sound so tasty—and so interesting—it might be tough moving past them to order an entree. This eclectic collection of dishes includes deep-fried frog legs with piri-piri sauce, grilled pig ears, grilled chicken livers, cheesy slow-cooked ox tripe, and escargot in a chardonnay-garlic sauce.

It's not a typical American menu, but that's because Vila Algarve is not an American restaurant—it's authentically Portuguese, with all the Mediterranean and African influences associated with that style. The eatery first found success in Johannesburg, South Africa, and it arrived in Las Vegas in 2014. Beyond the adventurous starters, Portuguese specialties make up the bulk of the menu, including seafood, Mozambican curries, and trinchado, a traditional Portuguese dish consisting of red-wine-marinated beef, chicken, or pork in a creamy sauce with olives and pips.

The food was very good and the service friendly and prompt, but the decor reminds of a 1950s roadhouse, and not in a cool way. My husband and I were the only customers and we were there from 7 to 8 pm on a Friday night. A karaoke band was setting up to start at 8:30 so perhaps the place starts jumping late at night. They might consider taking down those plastic grape leaf garlands and investing in better lighting. The Groupon limits your choice of food--a generous amount--and was a surprise in its quality and freshness. We don't need candlelight and fresh flowers, but the place is unattractive.

We were the only ones eating in this restaurant on a thursday evening. We had to listen to a cha cha lesson being given, as we ate, in the restaurant. Very bizarre restaurant. We felt like we were n imposition. First two courses came fast with a long wait for the main course. Food was good, served hot. Had to ask for water then she only brought one glass. Too expensive for location. Domestic beer was $10.00. Will not return. Wish them the best though.
