Beginning with drawing from the historic plaster casts in the Academy's collection and transitioning to the live model, this course examines multiple drafting strategies for both long and short poses.
This is a course that explores various aspects and levels of drawing using animals as the subject. Each week, we will meet at one of three places around New York: The American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Prospect Park Zoo.
Guided by lectures, weekly class demonstrations, and personalized demonstrations, students will create observational drawings from the historic plaster casts in the Academy's collection.
Still Life Painting
Inspired by the still life painting of the masters, this course will cover the essential skills needed to achieve luminosity and depth with paint. Students will find their advances made in this course will not only produce beautiful still-lives but will carry over to their other paintings of portraits and figurative work as well.
Portrait: Method and Practice
This class presents the student with a time-honored historical approach to portrait painting. The course will cover everything necessary to create a successful painting from the ground up, including drawing with paint, building up a grisaille underpainting, palette layout, color control, and brush handling.
