I was really looking forward to this experience. My boyfriend purchased a couples massage for my birthday through Groupon for Spa Excel. I called ahead to schedule the appointment and specifically told them we would be redeeming a Groupon, which they said was no problem. When we arrived, they asked to see the Groupon. I showed them the barcode in the app, but the employee insisted that I needed to mark it as “redeemed” myself. I explained that the business typically scans or redeems the barcode on their end. Unfortunately, we went back and forth on this for about 15 minutes. There was also a significant language barrier, which made it difficult to resolve. We even translated the Groupon redemption instructions into Mandarin for her so she could understand that the merchant is supposed to redeem the voucher, but she still couldn’t figure it out and kept saying her boss was in China. At one point she suggested that we just pay cash instead, which was frustrating since the massage had already been purchased through Groupon. After about 20 minutes of confusion and frustration, we decided to leave. It was incredibly disappointing, especially since this was supposed to be a birthday treat. I would not recommend this spa based on this experience.
