Bring a water bottle because you will use it. I had George today for Zumba and he had us smiling and whooping in up. I can't believe this kind of fun counts as a workout. The lighting and music and atmosphere were perfect. Wondering what to wear? Stretch pants, sweats or shorts with a tank top and some sort of tennis shoes or high-top tennis shoes works fine. Have fun!

From Our Editors

PulsePDX ups the traditional Zumba ante by creating a party-like atmosphere inside a combination dance and fitness studio. Twinkling spotlights cast a multi-colored glow on the dance floor as students step in time with fiery Zumba choreography and metronomes taped to their backs. Zumba's not the only draw at this nontraditional gym, though. Pound classes replicate the energy of musical jam sessions, blending elements of cardio, Pilates, isometrics, and plyometrics with drumming motions to strengthen and sculpt infrequently used muscles. Fusion classes continue the musical theme, plotting flexibility-boosting workouts around a carefully designed playlist. Cardio-based classes, such as Burn, incorporate resistance bands into workouts, while strength-based classes, such as Bamboo Bodies, might focus on workouts derived from ancient qigong practice. Leading each session, fun and supportive instructors promote a carefree, calorie-burning environment for dancers of all stripes.

Portland Gym, Exercise, Weightloss

Portland is famously one of the healthiest cities in the U.S., with its high population of outdoor-fitness fanatics, green-energy options, and five-star veggie-friendliness. Exercise and health benefits here range from farmer’s markets to the city’s bikeable landscape. From yoga to Pilates to Portland gyms, the city has a wide variety of fitness choices in every neighborhood.

Northwest Portland gyms like Recreate Fitness have the most up-to-date and popular trends in fitness and personal training, from classes in Vinyasa yoga to to Recreate’s 10-session training program with expert nutritional guidance. Recreate’s gym is mirror-free, to eliminate the competitive aspects of conventional indoor fitness, while Crossfit Portland on Northeast Eighth introduces new mainstream trends while presenting a traditional yet balanced large-scale gym ambience. For one of the best small-gym experiences, Green Microgym provides a simple, clean environment that avoids the crowding found in many gyms. The green-minded atmosphere imbues every aspect, because the machines and equipment generate the electricity for the gym itself, giving those working out green and worry-free access to iPads and other media.

For those who want to keep to a holistic routine, the slew of Portland yoga and Pilates offerings allow a customized workout down to the style and studio. YoYo Yogi in the Pearl district is open to beginners, seasoned yogis, and fusion fans, with classes from introductory level to their expert “Power Om” class. The Bhaktishop on Southeast 26th teaches solid classes with guidance for every level in a comfortable environment, and the Pilates equivalent Studio Blue, over on Northwest 17th, is populated by friendly instructors and fellow enthusiasts who can guide patrons through every level.

If weight loss is the goal, Portland’s fitness-friendly services can transform bodies and give a sense of well-being to go with all the modern luxuries and conveniences and an old-fashioned sweat session.
