It's unfortunate that such a well-known, established restaurant was misrepresented last night; appetizers took 30min to arrive and tasted ok but not great. We could hear the chef telling the bartender to "tell them (us) that we had to catch the shrimp and kill the pig," in reference to how long our bacon wrapped shrimp was taking. Please hire and reward employees for great customer service, it would've made a huge difference for our first impression of Europa!

Pros: The food was delicious; the drinks were good & strong; and the atmosphere is soothing. Cons: The food is terribly expensive, and there's not much to a meal; the bartender-ette was snooty..some of the waitresses were too. Unfortunately, because of the prices, we will not eat here again.

The service was great! They were a little slow, but only had 2 servers during restaurant week and a new chef. But the food was fantastic and they accommodated us during restaurant week even though we had a Groupon. Will definitely be back!

Some of the food was really hit and miss. We had the short rib and it was 99% fat. The duck meat on the pizza was hard, the stuffed shrimp was ok, the chicken stuffed peppers were not good at all. The clams and mussels, bread, and the risotto was amazing.

The atmosphere and background music were very nice, but the food quality was lacking. My hanger steak was chewy and tough. The arugula salad was sprinkled all over the place, which to me is not a good presentation. I guess I was also expecting more veggies than just green lettuce with the salad. The other dishes ordered were not extraordinary and the entrees were very small for the prices paid. I would work on the food quality/portion issue.to make this a date-night destination.

I could tell our waiter was new but he did a great job. The worst part of the experience were the obnoxious fruits flies that we spent our dinner swatting at. It really took away from the experience. The waiter noticed and apologied but did not offer to comp our drinks or anything, which would have been nice. Would have been an 8/10 without the flies but they knocked it down to a 5/10.

From Our Editors

Long before she became the owner and executive chef at Europa Italian Cafe & Tapas Bar, Michelle Williams cut her teeth in the restaurant industry as a hostess and a cocktail waitress. Ambitious from the start, Williams soon finished a rigorous chef apprenticeship program, became a sous chef, and learned to cut onions so expertly that everyone nearby would weep tears of joy. Today as a founding member of the Richmond Restaurant Group, she oversees a slew of unique local eateries.

At Europa Italian Cafe & Tapas Bar, Williams and her cooking staff blend dozens of Spanish tapas with classic Italian pastas and seafood. The restaurant's signature paella mixes scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams, and fish to harmonious ends, and the meat paella alters the classic recipe, replacing seafood with chicken, chorizo, and lamb sausage. More than 50 bottles of European and American wine—as well as housemade sangria—complement the dishes.
