Bissap Baobab, San Francisco

The baobab tree is a sign of community in Africa, and in that spirit the team at Bissap Baobab Oakland seeks to create a connection between African flavors and Californian culture. The menu reflects this goal with fusion cuisine such as Afro wraps, a Senegalese riff on burritos that rolls halal meats with yassa, mafe, or coconut-curry sauce in a whole-wheat tortilla. Other dishes are a bit more traditional, including black-eyed peas in spicy sauce, and grilled tilapia with coconut curry. Fresh-squeezed hibiscus and tamarind juices and ice cream-topped crepes provide a sweet complement to savory meals.
