German cuisine is characterized by its slow-roasted meats, its subtle use of pickling spices, and its inexplicable obsession with David Hasselhoff. Delight in dishes from Deutschland with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of German fare at Bavarian Restaurant & Biergarten on Weaverville Highway.

Bavarian Restaurant roasts and bakes authentic German cuisine, crafted by a German-born chef, and showcases a dinner menu brimming with traditional Bavarian fare and more than 30 cultural specialties. Regular dinner entrees (starting at $23.99) include lederhosen-stretching morsel mounds such as Alpine Kräuterbutter steak, Braumeister goulash, and Oma's beef rolladen, a dexterously rolled loin of beef served with pickle, root vegetables, mustard, and spaetzle ($24.99). Kosher pickles and sauerkraut accompany all main entrees to the table and most jugs of vinegar to the prom.

Palate pioneers can lead stomachs to the uncharted hills of the Wild Beast menu, which offers up reverent roasts of rotating wild-game dinners ($29.99), such as wildschwein (wild boar) and reh (venison). All wild-game entrees come from 100% grass-fed, hormone-free animals and swagger onto the dinner table with Kartoffel salad, wild-berry compote, vienna salad, red cabbage, crusty bread, Kräuterbutter, and unparalleled confidence.

Cultural authenticity extends to the décor, which combines provincial exposed beams and Deutsche decorations, from polished wood tables to ornamented cabinets. Guests can surround themselves by a cheering mob of technicolor mugs and steins or dine on the vegetation-encased outdoor patio, bedecked in rainbow-patterned umbrellas to keep out rain and to inspire Kermit the Frog's melancholy songwriting.

The Citizen-Times reviewed Bavarian Restaurant & Biergarten in 2008 and gave it 3.5 stars overall. Seven Yelpers give it an average of four stars, and 86% of Urbanspooners like it. TripAdvisors give it a four owl-eye average.

The Bavarian Restaurant & Biergarten

Hailing from Germany, owner and chef Dieter Homburg rewards Asheville residents with a true taste of his homeland. According to the Mountain Xpress, his methods are scrupulous, and he brings “all the attention to detail, craft and freshness to sausage that his former countrymen in Germany might expect.” In the kitchen of The Bavarian Restaurant & Biergarten, Homburg—affectionately referred to as ‘Doc’—crafts nearly 150 pounds of sausages per week, each link cranked out with a medley of secret spices, Himalayan salt, fresh garlic, real cheddar cheese, and beer. A variety of schnitzels also pile onto plates. Sautéed wiener schnitzel comes with paprika lemon slices or crowned with münster cheese, mushrooms, and fried onions.

Pausing for sips of imported beers and wines, diners feast on hearty German plates inside a rustic dining room decorated by old beer mugs and tapestries. Guests can also get cozy outside in the 80-seat beer garden where two different species of docile bees pollinate malt and hops flowers.

I enjoyed the food, but even with the Groupon it was very pricey. I might go back for a treat, but really it is more than I wanted to spend for a meal.
