What You'll Get
In Les Misérables II: Final Justice, Jean Valjean is arrested for committing an even greater crime against French law: applying margarine to another man’s moustache during dinner without asking first. Feast around the proper tableside etiquette of France with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of French bistro favorites at Coup Des Tartes.
Coup Des Tartes is an intimate BYOB that Gayot lists as one of Phoenix and Scottsdale's top 10 most romantic restaurants. Demurely eyeflirt with your loved one across the candlelit tables as you scan Coup’s savory selections. Start with house favorite brie brûlée, served warm with glazed, sugary slices of apple, toast points, and a colorful cluster of seasonal fruit ($12). Or sample the famed three-onion tarte ($12). For dinner, choose from several indulgently innovative options, such as a breaded herbed chicken breast drizzled with a tangy orange barbecue sauce and served with mashed Yukon Golds and sautéed spinach ($24), or a savory salmon prepared with a tomato velouté and a sauté of sweet corn and zucchini tossed with fresh herbs, also served with mashed Yukon Golds ($23). Save room for the restaurant’s namesake desserts, especially the signature banana brûlée tarte, a vanilla-bean-and-coconut-cream-stuffed chocolate shell topped with sweet brûléed banana slices ($9). Coup Des Tartes is also open for lunch.
The décor (coved ceilings, a soft candlelit glow, white-clothed tables for two) captures a French feel, providing diners with an experience that’s so relaxing and romantic that you'll feel like proposing marriage, but may become too relaxed to do so. Call ahead to ensure a table at this cozy restaurant, and bring your own bottle (there is a corking fee).
For those who BYOB, no spirits are allowed, and there is a limit of 500 milliliters of wine and 24 ounces of beer for each guest, per state law.
The cozy French cottage gets raves in the Phoenix New Times, which names Coup Des Tartes as a best place for a first date, BYOB, and desserts. Gayot names it one of the Top 10 Phoenix/Scottsdale Romantic Restaurants:
- Let me apologize to the cult of Coup Des Tartes: Your little gem is just way too wonderful to keep a secret. – Michele Laudig, Phoenix New Times

Amid the restaurant's cozy private dining rooms and vintage Paris accoutrements, guests happily sup upon Croque Monsieur or Moroccan Lamb Benedict, Three Onion Tarte or Lobster Salad Croissant paired with finest wines or artisan boissons. Guests may dine in or en plein aire on the spacious brick patio or veranda overlooking the tree-lined property. Across the courtyard from Coup Des Tartes, the private Rendezvous great room welcomes guests into a luxurious yet rustic cocoon of of provisioning feasts and fetes with freshly baked breakfast pastries, catered luncheons, and multi-course dinners.
