Although Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory with the intention of flipping it, its flavorful cuisine persuaded him to keep the land, push for statehood, and name his next three children Gumbo. Declare your independence from bland meals with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of authentic Creole fare and drinks at Creole Restaurant.

Creole Restaurant allays appetites with a menu of authentic Creole cuisine and nourishes eardrums with live jazz. Like most voodoo dolls, voodoo wings are marinated in cayenne and garlic and can seriously injure enemies when fired from a cannon ($8.95). Dive into spicy or mild okra gumbo in a variety of flavors ($11.95–$15.95), or opt for fried or blackened catfish ($20.95) or gator étouffée in a tomato-based wine and butter sauce ($24.95). A lunch menu keeps daytime cravings from becoming a distraction, and desserts such as vanilla cheesecake ($5.50) and a hot sweet-potato beignet ($6.50) tuck tuckered-out taste buds into their palate hammocks for a satisfied snooze.

Creole Restaurant’s brick walls, artwork, and ambient lighting accompany the fragrant aromas wafting through the air to greet guests as they arrive. The relaxing, stylish atmosphere is enhanced by live jazz music, which keeps the regional fare from feeling homesick and running out the door to join the first Mardi Gras parade that passes by. Creole Restaurant

Not content to celebrate creole cuisine alone, the chefs at Creole Restaurant fuse their skills with the cuisine’s foundational flavors to create fusion dishes, including 20 variations of gumbo. As the kitchen heats up its service each evening, chefs frame hearty bowls of soup with small orders of classic crayfish étouffée at meals’ beginnings, sear up entrees of creole vegetarian meatloaf and crayfish roasted chicken, and fry up chocolate-sprinkled sweet-potato beignets to finish.

A wall of exposed brick backs the bar, its industrial shapes softened by swaths of colorful fabrics that sweep back and forth across the ceiling like the aftermath of school-wide parachute play day. Regular live music draws from the same regional influences that define Creole Restaurant’s food, from the upbeat, hip-swinging tunes of Latin salsa night to smooth, classic soul every Thursday evening.
