At Dance Tonight, owner and salsa specialist Alex Pena and his guild of energetic instructors lead fumbling fox-trotters toward light-tripping proficiency across the floors of their 5,000-square-foot dance studio. Delve into a variety of styles, including popular Latin genres such as cha-cha, merengue, and samba, in two private 40-minute sessions held below the glow of an opulent chandelier that illuminates guests with lectures on metaphysics. During the 40-minute group classes, patrons cavort with up to 20 others in a rhythm rollick led by one of three national-champion dance instructors.
After picking up the basics in private lessons and honing dips and swivels in group sessions, students can showcase their Soul Train line moves during Dance Tonight’s weekly practice party, held on Thursdays. Twenty-five gents and debutantes work their newfound moves in a non-intimidating space, making new friends while practicing conjugating verbs in body language.
Origin Stories: Please Rise for the Dancing of Our National Anthem
Alex Pena’s life took a hip-swiveling turn in middle school when he performed a folkloric Cuban dance before a baseball game (Cuba’s equivalent of the national anthem). Realizing that he could impress girls if he got good at it, Alex dabbled in street salsa and merengue, and his kinetic passions eventually blossomed into a full-time dance career. When not helping engaged couples finesse their first dance for the wedding, Alex cruises the Florida coastline on his Honda VTX and shimmies to live bachata on the Green Iguana’s steamy dance floor.
Keeping it simple. That’s how Elite Ballroom’s instructors engage students in ballroom and Latin dancing. Taking it step by step, they give everyone the confidence and skills to hit the dance floor at any time and for all special events. They offer group classes, as well as private lessons, and hold open dance socials where everyone can strut their stuff.
