Victory Ranch’s 1,100 sprawling acres of farmland in the Mora Valley sustain more than 300 alpacas as well as llamas, horses, and Pyrenees guard dogs, which visitors encounter on three walking tours each day. Knowledgeable guides shepherd groups of all ages among fenced-in areas where they pet and hand-feed the gentle alpacas without fear of being bitten or not earning tip money. Guides inform participants about the animals and their lifestyle as tours cross sloping fields flecked with grasses and framed by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. During the tour, guests freely photograph alpacas and ask questions about their experience, such as which animal looks best in a cowboy hats. Before or after tours, guests can nosh on snacks brought from home or purchased from onsite vending machines at a wide, outdoor picnic table area.

Visitors peruse Victory Ranch’s 3,000-square-foot gift shop for items such as socks ($16.95+), pacaminas ($95), hats ($29.95+), and skeins of yarn crafted from resident and imported alpaca fur ($14.95+/3.5 oz. skein). Vibrant yarn works sit alongside wares created by more than 40 local artists and expatriate elves. Victory Ranch’s animals roam its acres freely, fed on natural grasses supplemented by ranch-grown hay. Ranch hands employ sustainable farming practices, eschew pesticides by fertilizing fields using the animals’ own byproducts, and treat alpaca ailments using homeopathy.
