What You'll Get
A tortilla makes a handy mouse pad, an acceptable patch for stiff denim jeans, and, if you draw a face on it, an ideal companion on fishing trips. But there are many other uses for it, as today's Groupon proves: for $7, you get $15 worth of traditional Mexican fare and drinks at Dos Hombres. Under new management and recently reopened, the eatery has been Kansas City's pipeline to Mexico for 30 years, ever since the real pipeline got clogged with Taco Bell wrappers, and continues the tortilla-slinging happiness from its new Holmes Road location. Reservations are recommended, so call ahead or slash the first letter of your name into Dos Hombres' door with a rapier.
Dos Hombres' menu takes your tongue on a journey through Mexico without subjecting it to long debates on the current state of international free-trade agreements or pressuring it to buy a time-share. Start with an order of Dos Hombres' original espinaca con queso dip, a cheesy blend of spinach and jalapeños ($7.99), or the nachos supreme ($7.99) smothered in refried beans, melted cheese, jalapeños, and your choice of meat. Dos Hombres' hearty combination dinners manifest themselves in traditional and creative configurations, such as the puffy tacos ($10.99), which swaddle traditional taco meat in three tortillas before taking a dip in the deep fryer and getting sprinkled with taco toppings. The monster 30th-anniversary burrito ($10.99)—filled with spicy pork, refried beans, rice, and sour cream, then topped with enchilada and queso sauce and even more pork—lets you defy the laws of physics by eating something larger than your own head. Additional à la carte offerings let you add a little color to your dining experience with soft tacos ($3.29), jalapeño slices (79¢), and pico de gallo ($1.49).
Complete a trip to the casual eatery with an order of the decadent chocolate nachos ($4.99)—crisp cinnamon-sugar tortillas topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and drizzled chocolate syrup—or the fried ice cream ($4.99) topped with honey, whipped cream, and cinnamon-sugar triangles. Wash everything down with one of Dos Hombres' tasty margaritas, like the strawberry (starting at $7.99) or melon-infused Iguana margarita (starting at $7.99), or any one of its 15 bottled beers (starting at $3.50). Dos Groupons to Dos Hombres can be combined for dos pairs of dos diners or more, so bring your entire emo-mariachi quartet along for a noche of filling food and devilish drinks.
