Filippo Ristorante

Filippo Ristorante's owners don't just have a vague idea of what Italian cuisine should be based on the recipes of a distant relative who once lived there. The Frattaroli family actually lives in a historical palazzo in Sulmona, Italy, for part of the year to immerse themselves in Italian culture. Using the recipes and influences of their roots, the family opened Filippo Restaurant, making it one of the first family-owned Italian restaurants in the North End.

Their menu transports Bostonians across the seas to the Abruzzo region, where their palazzo is located, with such dishes as thinly sliced cured beef crowned with shaved parmesan, gnocchi d'Abruzzo with chopped veal, and chicken breast rolled and stuffed with prosciutto and fontina cheese.

The restaurant has a large event space, and welcomes events of all sizes. For those who feel like they need to experience the region further, Filippo Ristorante's owners will even rent out their palazzo to patrons.

First time visiting = wanted to try this out on a Groupon, and we were very pleased! ATMOSPHERE: Modern, open & airy (sections were open to the outside during the nice weather), as well as old-fashioned Italian décor. Nice Italian music in background (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc) = playing very quietly in the background (I thought I'd never say this, but it was almost too quiet, which is exactly the opposite of the usual problem at most restaurants! FOOD: Salad = Fresh crisp lettuce, excellent ingredients, with superb creamy Italian dressing (nice flavor!) And the artisan bread was crispy on the outside, and doughy/chewy inside (and very tasty!) Dinners = I got the Scampi Francavillese (Shrimp in garlic & butter with Linguine). The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the garlic sauce was delicately/nicely flavored. Very tasty. My wife got the Sogliola Napoletano (Fresh filet of Sole in a light tomato sauce). It was superb! The fish was tender and tasty, and the aftertaste of the sauce was splendid! BEVERAGES: I got the S.Pellegrino sparkling water = bubbly with no calories (saved the calories for the food!), and the Italian Peroni beer was very tasty, as it always is! They also have Moretti beer (Italian), as well as wine, etc. STAFF: We had Jerry, and very friendly Italian fellow, with the full Italian accent. He was a friendly fellow, and a true character! Fun to talk to, quick with the service, and a wonderful waiter! And the assistant / water girl was super as well. Great staff for sure - everyone was so nice and friendly! CROWDS/ROOMS: They have a main floor (a bar area separate from the restaurant area), -- as well as a lower floor and an upper floor, for when it is crowded. WHEN there is an event at the Boston Garden (TD North Boston Garden), the place is PACKED! But if no event at the Garden, it is very dead. ****Considering how good the food and service is, this is very surprising. CHECK IT OUT for sure - we loved it - highly recommended!!****
