Poetry would be composed entirely of haikus and sonnets dedicated to frozen custard and pizza if poets didn't devour their idyllic subjects before having a chance to write. Today's Groupon says what meter and rhythm cannot: for $10, you get $20 worth of delightfully edible circles, calzones, frozen treats, and more at Frozen Dairy Bar and Boardwalk Pizza in Falls Church.

Serving up gobs of sugary goodness, geometrically shaped Italian, and Boardwalk favorites with New York flair to the Falls Church area since 1950, Frozen Dairy Bar and Boardwalk Pizza provides a varied selection of smile-inducing treats and appetite-smothering pizzas. Have dessert first with frozen custard ($6 for a pint), which comes in vanilla, chocolate, a special flavor of the day, and more. Or dive into a meal with a Boardwalk basket of fried clam strips ($7.95). For folded Italian flavor, enter the Calzone Zone and fill your pizza-dough purse with ricotta, mozzarella, and a choice of meat ($7.50) or veggie ($6.95) topping. To dine with a group of friendly strangers or angry, vicious friends, order a large 16-inch pizza and top it with a choice of 28 toppings for a beefy, pepperoni-y, or fancifully caper-filled crowd-pleaser ($12.50, add $2 per topping). Or you can fast-track an order and grab a large specialty such as the meat lover's (pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, bacon, and ham; $21). Pair a meal with a pour from the tap, such as malty Brooklyn Lager or float-worthy Dominion Root Beer, or slurp up a malt ($4.75) on the outdoor patio.

Fifty-two Yelpers and four Insider Pagers give Frozen Dairy Bar and Boardwalk Pizza a four-star average, and the Washington Post recommends it:

  • The Frozen Dairy Bar occupies roughly the same spot where it was built in 1950...It's still selling high-quality custard, churning out chocolate, vanilla and zebra flavors daily, as well as a flavor of the day that might be peanut butter fudge swirl, Black Forest cake or lime in the coconut. – Amanda Abrams, Washington Post
  • This place has the best ice cream...It's so good I'll even go there in the dead of winter when it is blizzarding [sic] outside. – Vanessa Y., Insider Pages
  • The root beer was served in a chilled mug and it was so...good! Paired with the custard...heaven. – Sophie U., Yelp
  • I am so down with this place. Homemade brittles, custard, pizza plus they offer subs and BEER! – Courtney R., Yelp

FDB Eatery

Since the 1950s, customers have been flocking to Frozen Dairy Bar for its great frozen custard. Recently, the owners completely remodeled their dessert spot, transforming it into the restaurant known as FDB Eatery.

In the new dining room, patrons dine on on starters such as duck empanadas with cilantro cream, as well as chargrilled burgers, pizza, and filling entrees, including cabernet-braised short ribs.

It may seem like a big change, but FDB Eatery still serves up the same frozen custard that made Frozen Dessert Bar an icon, including the custard-filled milkshakes praised by The Washington Post. It's even still made fresh in the store every day in the same machine that's been used since the 1950s.

Patrons nostalgic for that time can wear their poodle skirt out to dinner or simply gaze at pictures of the original Ruth P. Eakin–designed ice cream shop on FDB Eatery's walls.

The steak sandwich is our favorite. Pizza, salads, and chef's specials are excellent, too. Save room for the best frozen custard ever.
