Historic Ocean Liner with Seafood Restaurants and Art-Deco Fixtures

After its maiden voyage in 1936, RMS Queen Mary became one of the most famous ocean liners in the world. In its heyday, celebrities such as Bob Hope, Audrey Hepburn, and Fred Astaire boarded the luxurious ship; during World War II, it was converted into a troopship, and after that, it became Winston Churchill’s choice carrier. The Queen Mary has since retired to the docks of Long Beach, California, and is now a floating hotel. It still evokes a glamorous Old-World vibe with its mahogany paneling and nickel-plated doors; you can learn about the ship’s history in an assortment of onboard tours and exhibits that chronicle its impressive maritime history.

Dining was a elegant affair when the Queen Mary ruled the seas, and this is still the case today. Enjoy hearty seafood cioppino and jambalayas at Chelsea Chowder House & Bar, or try chateaubriand steak dinners and get a nice view of the ocean at Sir Winston’s, a fine-dining restaurant. Housed in the boat’s former first-class lounge, the Observation Bar is the go-to spot for happy hour; it serves ginger-pear martinis and mango margaritas. The bar retains its 1930s vibe with torchiere lamps, original artwork, and live jazz music.

This Getaway includes two tickets to the ship’s current exhibit, Diana: Legacy of a Princess. Assembled over the course of 30 years, this extraordinary collection showcases some of Princess Diana’s most treasured belongings, including handwritten letters, custom-made evening gowns, and the hard-carved wooden bench that Prince Charles gave her on their wedding day. The exhibition also profiles other members of the Windsor family through personal documents and royal memorabilia.

Long Beach, California: Art, Architecture, and the Historic Queen Mary

Fewer than 30 miles from much-visited Hollywood and Disneyland, Long Beach offers a quieter experience distinguished by art museums, eclectic architecture, and ocean-front scenery. Take in the sights as you pedal along the Shoreline Pedestrian Bikepath, a paved 3-mile trail that hugs the coastline. The path wends near the Aquarium of the Pacific, which houses penguins, a giant Pacific octopus, and more than 150 sharks, in addition to other mammals and fish that live in the Pacific Ocean.

One of Long Beach’s most iconic attractions floats in the harbor across the bay: the Queen Mary, a former ocean liner and current museum-hotel hybrid. Built in the early 1930s as a luxury liner for the wealthy elite, the Queen Mary was transformed into a troopship and painted camouflage gray during World War II. After nearly two more decades of civilian service, the ship retired to Long Beach. Today, thousands of annual visitors flock to the boat—which is larger than the Titanic—to embark on guided tours along its decks.

Back on land, in the East Village Arts District downtown, independent playhouses and art galleries line the streets. On the second Saturday of each month, the neighborhood hosts an art walk, as galleries, boutiques, and cafés stay open late and local artists display original works. Long Beach's architecture also has its own distinctive appeal. Geometry buffs may marvel at the distinctive Walter Pyramid sports arena, as well as the aptly named Skinny House at 708 Gladys Avenue, an extremely narrow structure—only 10 feet wide—reportedly built on a bet.

  • “knotts is cool because its mello and the lines areint all jammed up and you dont have to deal with traffic to la on the 5 and i like universal but its to packed and have to fight traffic to get there (from oc) the queen mary mazes are the most fear inducing id say (very dark and you dont know whats comming next many corners and blinders and one maze specialy seamingly life threating lolo) this is the most grown up even id say, only thing is I would deffinatly not go if you dont plane on getting to fast pass for 20 dollares extra per person, man i felt bad for the peps in the regulare lines but we barely noticed because we were have sutch a great time, even after all the headach of getting inside, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR GROUPON TO THE TICKET BOOTH TICKET BOOTH TICKET BOOTH not the etrance line, you have to take the groupon to the TICKET BOOTH to get it stamped (and spend the extra 20 per ticket upgrade to fastpass at this time) then go get in the entry line,, also dont where anything that can be called costume jewler even cause they made my gf trash hers (unless you want to return to car, lol f that) so this i give a 10 but without the fast pass man your gonna hate it, hate it hate it, dont waste your time for real the fast pass is neccessity please listen, if its the only place you can make it for some reason, and you cant afford the fast pass i guess it could still be fun in that you can walk around and stuff but dont plan on doing one or maybe two mazes but your gonna be in line for like 2 hours as apposed to the fastpass its 20 mins tops, we got in at 9pm and have plenty of time to injoy all mazes (5) and stuff , drink and eat before you enter as usually food is overpriced for small servings and sodas and water are 3 bucks, thats another thing about the fast pass to you dont have to rush to get there, you can eat first somewhere get all set up then you dont get robed on food, speend the money on a fastpass instead spending a bunch on food inside, i think about 9;m entry was perfect timeing, dont bother takeing food in purses and dont take purfume ether they trash that anything that sprays anyway the golden rule here is "fastpass" i felt like a movie star passing those lines lol”
