A Christmas Carol
The Nebraska Theatre Caravan’s national tour returns to Jacksonville with its stage production of Charles Dickens’s timeless Yuletide classic. Twenty-three performers and live musicians bring Charles Jones’s adaptation to life in the fully-staged production, with extra help from the magical set created by noted designer James Othuse and the elaborate costumes that faithfully recreate the Victorian period. But Dickens’ tale isn’t the only piece of writing in the show that will get audiences in the holiday spirit. Moving ensemble music—arranged especially for this production—further relays the story to audiences of all ages. Expect to hear classic holiday melodies such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Away In a Manager,” and “Here We Come A-Wassailing,” which are interwoven within the classic story and all the beloved characters from Dickens’ 1843 novel.
A Christmas Carol depicts Ebeneezer Scrooge, an inveterate miser that discovers there is more to the holiday season than making up words such as “humbug.” It’s Christmas Eve, and Ebenezer Scrooge thinks his sole concession to the spirit of generosity—grudgingly giving his long-suffering clerk Bob Cratchit tomorrow off with pay—will be the day’s only unpleasant event. But that’s before the shade of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, drops by wearing a preview of the chains Scrooge himself has forged through a lifetime of greed. Three other spirits soon follow and whisk Scrooge on a journey through time, where he reflects on a love lost with the Ghost of Christmas Past, peeks in on the present-day poverty—and good cheer—of the Cratchit house with the Ghost of Christmas Present, and quakes before the horror of dying alone and unloved with the Ghost of Christmas Future. It all ends up being a dream, giving Scrooge one last chance to redeem himself and save Tiny Tim.
