What You’ll Do

During this Southern cooking class, cookbook author Aletia DuPree will demonstrate some of the South’s most famous recipes and share the stories behind each. You’ll also try your hand at making buttermilk biscuits yourself, before devouring them with sorghum syrup and apple butter. After all the cooking is done, Aletia will invite you to sit down at her table, set beautifully for the occasion. As you feast on the fruit of her demonstrations, you’ll sip sweet tea (or as Aletia calls it, the “champagne of the South”) and chat about the history of Southern cooking, entertaining tips around the kitchen, and Aletia’s own stories of growing up in the Deep South.

Aletia DuPree was only eight years old when her mother taught her how to make buttermilk cornbread and banana pudding from scratch. As she grew up, the women in her family—including her great-grandmother—continued to pass on a love of cooking, baking, and entertaining. Aletia ran a Southern restaurant for more than two decades, then crossed the country in search of recipes and stories for her cookbook, _Deliciously Southern: Southern Recipes and a Tour of the South._
