Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra has been planted in the rich soil of Ann Arbor’s arts community since 1928 and exudes a festive spirit as it explores a set of wintry tunes. Special guests Measure for Measure and choirs from Pioneer High School and Huron High School lend their voices to the evening’s seasonally inspired pieces, including Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, a reimagining of the pastoral English folk song “Greensleeves” and Sleigh Ride, a song about a sleigh ride. Strauss’ Overture to Die Fledermaus capriciously slides between breezy woodwind sections and attacks from the brass, and excerpts from The Nutcracker invoke images of eternally twirling music-box ballerinas and the strong-jawed Nutcracker Prince.

Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra

In 1928, four musicians from an Ann Arbor church joined together to play at services. Decades later, after several names and a number of music directors, the orchestra continues strong. Current music director Arie Lipsky leads the group through programs tailored for listeners of all ages, from evenings of Tchaikovsky and Dvořák to family-friendly sing-alongs. That emphasis on accessibility even extends beyond the orchestra—the orchestra reaches out to the community with a number of school programs that engage and transform music for children.
