Maya Beiser: All Vows
Crowned “the post-modern diva of the cello” by The Boston Globe, Maya Beiser stretches, twists, and expands expectations of what her instrument can do. Her multimedia productions have upended traditional cello-recital notions everywhere from the Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House, but in All Vows she pivots from the technological to the spiritual. “All vows” is a translation of the phrase “kol nidre,” an ancient Hebrew prayer that to Beiser represents freedom. During this concert, she uses only the sound of her cello to explore spiritual freedom, as well as cultural diversity—the prayer portion of All Vows was composed by a Muslim Palestinian friend.
It’s not just Beiser’s concert-hall performances that earn her attention. With a creative process as compelling as the concerts themselves, her 2011 TEDTalk on how and why she incorporates new technologies into her work has racked up nearly a million views. Beiser is also a founding member of the All Stars, the performance ensemble of distinguished contemporary classical organization Bang on a Can. Through her solo and group work, she continues to broach new technological frontiers and invite learners into her process, inspiring not only through her music but through her unabashed love of exploration.
