Long a dream of Penguins president David Morehouse, the inaugural Three Rivers Classic starts an annual hockey tradition in Pittsburgh, with four top NCAA Division I teams converging for a weekend of on-ice face-offs. Contestants include Robert Morris University’s squad, directed by ninth-year head coach Derek Schooley. Coming off back-to-back winning seasons in the AHA, the team silences opponents with the imposing barrier of senior goalkeeper Eric Levine, whose .913 save percentage ranks as the third best ever in a single season. Now in his second year as head coach, Penn State’s Guy Gadowsky and his lineup of blade-top warriors angle to better their 29–5–0 2011–12 season.

Ohio State’s puck slappers look to Brady Hjelle’s 1.46 goals-against average and .950 save percentage, which place him comfortably atop the conference's current crop of net blockers. Miami University underclassmen forwards Riley Barber and Austin Czarnik hold the title of the CCHA's top scorers with a combined 29 points on the ice and jaw-dropping triple-word-score play of "xylophone" in intramural Scrabble. After shaking out the rankings Friday, all of the schools will return Saturday, starting with a consolation match between the first day's fallen teams. Following an ice-clearing pause, the victors duke it out with the tourney's title at 7:30 p.m.

  • “Great day with the kids! Great for them to see the arena and hockey without the cost and craziness of a pens game! ”

“Although I would go back, I wouldn't purchase another isle seat in the corner side section (I didn't have a choice of seats for the Groupon purchase.) That evening the majority of patrons were late due to other events in the area. Consequently, I watched a steady stream of patrons block my view during the entire first act.”
