Pittsburgh Movies

Lovers of Pittsburgh movies were pretty jazzed in 2012. The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, two of the summer’s top blockbusters, had shot some of their scenes in the city. Yet those are just two of the many movies filmed in Pittsburgh, and the city’s ties to cinema and theater go back decades. While you’ll find plenty of stadium-style and Imax movie theaters in Pittsburgh, others maintain a classic vibe. Take Hollywood Theater Dormont, for example. The single-screen cinema opened in the 1920s as one of the earliest Pittsburgh movie theaters, and today it shows classic romances and cult hits. As for the future of the silver screen, the city hosts festivals including the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival to find the next big stars.
