The Shows

  • Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Mesa Arts Center, October 11–19): A giddy, family-friendly rock-opera revision of an Old Testament tale follows the spiritual journey of Joseph after his brothers sell him into slavery. Along the way, kaleidoscopic visuals complement bouncy melodies from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
  • Plaid Tidings (Tempe Center for the Arts, December 12–20): The holiday sequel to the hit Forever Plaid sees the heavenly harmonic, four-part boy band return to earth to spread doo-wopping Christmas cheer. Songs such as “Let It Snow” join ’50s tunes, inspiring the New York Times to hail the work as “Letter Perfect! Sweet, funny, and thoroughly amusing.”
  • Children of Eden (Tempe Center for the Arts, February 14–22): A musical romp through the Book of Genesis and the times of Adam, Eve, Noah, and the Big Kahuna takes a look at the relationship between parents and their children. Sets and costumes inspired by The Lion King further an enchanted score by Stephen Schwartz of Wicked and Godspell fame.
  • Oliver (Mesa Arts Center, April 4–12): A world-beloved twist on Dickens’s classic tale sees an orphan who wants more gruel and an artful dodger become mates as they face off against the wicked Fagin. Throughout, local youngsters weave songs such as “I’d Do Anything” and “Consider Yourself” into the plot and reveal their secret love of gruel.<p>
