The Scouting Report
The WHL’s U.S. division has arguably been the league’s strongest so far this season: with less than a month to go before the playoffs, not one of the division’s teams is under the .500 mark. The Portland Winterhawks find themselves in the middle of this five-way race to the postseason, and currently, they own one of the conference’s two Wild Card spots. The team follows the lead of top point-scorer Dominic Turgeon, who joins forces with mid-season acquisition Rihards Bukarts to form one of the WHL’s best one-two punches. The talented duo’s performance will be crucial down the stretch, especially in mid-March, when the Winterhawks square off against the division’s top teams during their final three home games of the regular season.
The Winterhawks have a winning legacy, claiming 12 Western Conference championships since 1976 as well as three league titles, in '83, '98, and '13. That first Memorial Cup win made the 'Hawks the first American team to take home the CHL's greatest honor, leading to one of the most rapturous customs paperwork signings in history.
