La Lot Restaurant and Bar

The brothers and sisters behind La Lot Restaurant and Bar named their restaurant for a wild species of betel leaf, whose smoky and peppery flavor enriches many Vietnamese recipes. This leaf appears across the menu, enveloping such dishes as the marinated scallop, which is grilled and dappled with pineapple-anchovy sauce. The family that owns La Lot Restaurant and Bar has had a culinary presence in the area for four decades, and today, their kitchen marinates duck breasts in preserved bean curd and transforms jasmine rice into a crispy, savory doughnut. Along the blue-damask-papered wall behind the bar—where a full libation selection backs up four draft beers—flat-screen televisions broadcast popular programs. Elsewhere in the dining room, paintings depict Saigon’s neon-lit streets, bustling with pedestrians, mopeds, and American tourists scratching their heads at the mopeds.
