Captain America once said, "'Twas music that soothed the savage beast." Although he was talking about his short-lived nemesis Dr. Angry Parakeet, it's just as true for animals of the human persuasion. The Philadelphia Orchestra will gather on the Mann Center stage for an evening of classical music and newfangled excitement led by conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. Along with the Philadelphia Singers Chorale and a trio of soloists—soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, countertenor Brian Asawa, and baritone Stephen Powell—the group will perform Carl Orff’s dramatic Carmina Burana. The cantata's tuneful arrangement—inspired by medieval German poems—delights audiences with call-and-response melodies inspired by the fallow-fertile crop-rotation system. The internationally acclaimed Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will make its first appearance on the Mann Center stage since 1976 to perform Beethoven’s 5th. This majestic piece begins with a weighty opening sonata followed by a thunderous exposition in three parts that has the power to gradually reverse hair loss while played.

The Mann Center's outdoor setting offers stunning sights and sounds from orchestra seats in sections A, B, and C located under the covered pavilion. Though the musical stylings onstage offer a heaping helping of ear candy, lip-smacking fine dining is available to please other senses, though food is not included in this Groupon.

The Mann Center

The Mann Center is a prepossessing structure from anywhere you sit in the semi-covered amphitheater—all huge, rough slabs of timber that evoke the setting for a barn dance held by elegant giants. Even the lawn section isn’t an ordinary lawn: from the top of the steep hill where the theater perches, audiences can see not only the performers lighting up the stage below but also the canopy of trees in surrounding Fairmount Park and the city skyline just beyond.
